The idea that using the word to describe any woman is "an American import" seems to betray a blind spot. Don't know if it's one that's rooted in class differences (I know nothing about your background), or just in relative command of manners; but the idea that, as Izzy in typical cocksure fashion claimed, "over here the C word is never used to insult a woman" is bollocks.

I do find "****" harsher and more vulgar than "dick," but then I'm chivalrous unless confronted by a wailing hag, and even then I wouldn't use "The C Word."

There are plenty of acceptable words to use to describe a disagreeable woman without resorting to vulgarities: The aforementioned Hag, Harridan, Bimbo, Bitch, Crone, Ratchet (If you're hip) etc.

You can even try these examples of foreign slang: Boseulachi (Korean), or Sheng nu (Chinese)

The notion that use of the term "****" is somehow nuanced in the UK and entirely vulgar in the US is, as you noted, bollocks.

Maybe it was where I grew up, (London) or the social milieu (distinctly middle class) but in, let us say, 1965, if one of my pals had called a girl or woman, however much he was angry with her, a "****", it would have seemed slightly inappropriate (linguistically, I mean, not morally or politically). A **** was a guy. Guys who called women cunts were in the pages of Last Exit to Brooklyn, sure, and we knew of the usage, but it just wasn't very common. The **** = hated man meaning was the dominant one. That was then. Now, of course, lots of people call women cunts.

This is my whole point. The human species is gynocentric by default. Even people who are aware of it have to constantly make an effort to recognize their gynocentric bias, and then consciously train themselves to act against it.

I'm not even saying that there's anything the species can ultimately do to overcome it for good, I'm just saying let's at least acknowledge that it exists. Let's at least acknowledge the elephant in the room is there.
