Democrats made significant gains Tuesday in Virginia’s House of Delegates, snaring at least 14 seats in an upset that stunned members of both parties and arrived with national implications.

Unofficial returns showed Democrats unseating at least 11 Republicans and flipping three seats that had been occupied by GOP incumbents who didn’t seek reelection. Four other races were so close that they qualify for a recount, and results will determine control of the chamber. The results marked the most sweeping shift in control of the legislature since the Watergate era.

But a large bomb would do the trick.

Someone could come up with diabolical booby traps and activate them with a cell phone while watching over the internet from a camera on a drone.

A potentially large group of people receiving Social Security benefits are people who, in the language of federal gun laws, are unable to manage their own affairs because of “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease.”

Though such a ban would keep at least some people who pose a danger to themselves or others from owning guns, the strategy also would include numerous people who may just have bad memories or difficulty balancing checkbooks, the critics argue.

Sure, any idiot can walk into a sporting goods store and purchase bomb-making materials.

Why not administer competency tests to those who feel they've been unfairly classified? We already have millions of armed cretins on the loose, why would we want more mentally ill people owning and carrying weapons?

Off-year gubernatorial elections are only weak predictors of future midterm results, but tonight’s outcome is yet another sign that the GOP really is in electoral peril. Donald Trump’s flukey, narrow win in the 2016 presidential election did not inaugurate some crazy new era in which the rules don’t apply and nothing matters. If you have an incumbent president who’s unpopular, backed by a Congress that’s pursuing an unpopular agenda, you’re going to be in trouble.

And Republicans are definitely in trouble.

Across a series of special elections held over the past year, Democratic candidates for House and state legislature have been outperforming Hillary Clinton’s 2016 margin by 11 points and Barack Obama’s 2012 margin by 9 points.

Rather, they found, in data that has since been repeatedly confirmed, that American crime is simply more lethal. A New Yorker is just as likely to be robbed as a Londoner, for instance, but the New Yorker is 54 times more likely to be killed in the process.

Pipe bombs and pressure cooker bombs are trivially easy to get materials for.

It seems to me that if someone is proficient in changing magazines, having to change them more frequently would not significantly impact a semi-auto shooting spree.

Another good point is, many mentally ill people are non-violent and vulnerable to predation, and probably should be allowed to have a gun to defend themselves.

Great logic there. So somebody's delivering a parcel and gets shot by a paranoid who thinks everyone's out to kill him.
