Trump administration moving quickly to build up nationwide deportation force

An internal Department of Homeland Security assessment obtained by The Washington Post shows the agency has already found 33,000 more detention beds to house undocumented immigrants.

The agency also is considering ways to speed up the hiring of hundreds of new Customs and Border Patrol officers, including ending polygraph and physical fitness tests in some cases, according to the documents. Trump has called for CBP to hire 5,000 new agents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement an additional 10,000.

CBP also is laying the groundwork to potentially hold immigration court hearings through video conference at or near U.S. ports of entry.

One area in which the Trump administration could potentially increase its deportation capacity at relatively lower costs is through the expansion of a program in which ICE grants local law enforcement agencies immigration enforcement powers traditionally reserved for the federal government.

The program fell out of favor in the latter years of President Barack Obama's administration. Trump's executive orders instruct ICE to expand the program and allows CBP, which did not previously participate, to launch its own version - in hopes of creating a "force multiplier."

"This is an administration that very much is interested in setting up that mass deportation infrastructure and creating the levers of a police state," said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. "In these documents, you have more proof and evidence that they're planning to carry it out."

Trump appears unlikely to block Comey’s testimony

WASHINGTON — President Trump does not plan to invoke executive privilege to try to prevent James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, from providing potentially damaging testimony to Congress on statements the president made about an investigation into his former national security adviser, two senior administration officials said on Friday.

Mr. Trump could still move to block the testimony next week, given his history of changing his mind at the last minute about major decisions. But legal experts have said Mr. Trump has a weak case to invoke executive privilege because he has publicly addressed his conversations with Mr. Comey, and any such move could carry serious political risks.

One of the administration officials said Friday evening that Mr. Trump wanted Mr. Comey to testify because the president had nothing to hide and wanted Mr. Comey’s statements to be publicly aired. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a decision that had not been announced.
