Chicago Trib. Endorsement of Gary Johnson?

What do you make of this? And why is this not 'earthshaking' news?

I'm not a conspiracy theory fan but the lack of attention to a credible candidate when the two main ones are so 'universally' unpopular is just weird to me.

Are we that distracted by the Trump/Hillary clown show?

Johnson is a lot of things. Credible isn't one of them.

@Leadfoot,
We probably need to start a newspaper endorsement thread. This isn't Johnson's first endorsement. He has six endorsements although the Tribune is the first paper with a circulation greater than 150k. Two of those endorsers supported President Obama four years ago. No papers have endorsed Trump, 21 have endorsed Clinton, nine of which supported Romney. Three who endorsed Romney last year are not endorsing this year and two have said "Not Trump".

@edgarblythe,
50 National Security Officials say Trump is not qualified.

Quote:
“Most fundamentally, Mr. Trump lacks the character, values and experience to be president,” the letter reads. “He weakens U.S. moral authority as the leader of the free world.”

By singling out Johnson are you saying Trump and Hillary are credible?
At least I don't laugh when I think about Johnson as president.

What constitutes 'credible' in your mind?

@Leadfoot,
I started out not dismissing Gary Johnson, got some of his points. Later realized that I only liked a speck or two or three of his points. Still, I defended him to Izzy, re the Aleppo mess, saying I disagreed with him a lot, but I didn't think he is stupid. So, we spat, which happens on occasion, but continue talking, listening.

I've switched.

I take Johnson as a foolbody being watched and tempered by Weld, who is smarter.

How could the Chi Tribune miss this?

A site that lists candidates' positions, which I quoted on another thread a while back, altered their presentation for Johnson since then. He doesn't look as objectionable on there now. But the list was based on statements he himself has made, so, the updated list may be based on his statements as a candidate, instead of an overall assessment. I stand by my rejection of him.

I would ask all candidates whether or not God has spoken personally and directly to them.

To me it's just bizarre for the Tribune to have endorsed him. He never heard of Aleppo until an interviewer asked him about it, and then the interviewer had to tell him what Aleppo is, and where it is. He apparently thinks Obi-Wan Kenobi is a real person, and a world leader. This joker is the most bizarre candidate of whom i have ever heard.

@Setanta,
I saw a vid of their convention. The attendees were mostly dressed for a star trek get together.

I liked the boy from the time I met him, but governor of NM seems about all he could handle.

I'm hearing a lot of dismissal of Gary Johnson but not one shred of objective criticism.

What is it about Gary Johnson or his policies that you don't like?

As far as the Aleppo thing, I suspect anyone who says they haven't ever momentarily blanked on something they were totally familiar with is lying. If you watch the entire conversation, it is clear Johnson knew full well what it was and what was going on.

@edgarblythe,
And your reasons for not liking any of those policies is.. ?

That list and your opposition to it would seem to indicate that you simply oppose any reduction in government spending and regulation favor more of both.

Is that your basic position?

I tend to favor the opposite, as Thomas Jefferson said, 'The best government is the government that governs the least." That does not mean 'anarchy', it means that government should be limited to the things which help society and not limit individual freedoms.

We passed that threshold some time ago IMHO.

@Leadfoot,
Government held money ought to do something for the people, such as medicare for all, and rebuilding a crumbling infrastructure. Social Security is not an entitlement. If the government repaid what they robbed out of it, it would be able to meet its commitments. The rich ought to be held accountable when they break the law, and taxed. The military ought to be put on a budget and they should be held accountable for the billions they lost track of. **** Jefferson. He did not live in a society like ours.

@edgarblythe,
I don't get it Edgar, why are you making my case for me? Gary Johnson wants pretty much exactly what you want in that post.

When you point out all the failings of government when using our money, why on earth would you want more of the same?
