Gaiman and McKean are really famous for this kinda gothic fantasy thing or something ... but they're also really good. I bought their Signal To Noise and I swear, its a work of brilliance, both graphic and in the ways of recounting stories ... complicated, but very impressive.

Anyway, they also did two kids' books. One is The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish.

It is sooooo cute!

The drawings are playful and cutesy yet really beautiful, and full of all kinds of little things, and the whole story is - like, you actually just suddenly remember like, damn, thats what it was like being nine! (Or something).

Its really thin, but its the funniest surreal little story and the prettiest book ...

Hey, talking about Peanuts, what about Mutts?

I love Mutts, I got five volumes of 'em or something - used to buy one whenever I felt like crawling up with the covers somewhere. These cartoons are so sweet, in such a pleasant low-key kinda way - so kind and funny - really a comfort read. Wish my newspaper carried a daily Mutts or something - something to smile about every day!

My favourite in the Mutts cast is Sid, the goldfish ... and this is my all-time favourite Mutts cartoon:

I'm rather fond of Garfield - the self centredness is a little like some furry horror not too far away ...

I've found a site with the illustrations for Ethel & Ernest, Raymond Briggs lovely book about his parents (it makes you cry at the end - be warned)

Just wanted to say firstly GO ALDISTAR!
I am not working either and am working away at my own work (illustration type work/painting etc) and it is hard to keep your mind on it sometimes - as I reach the third month... (need to get a job! Bet I won't be saying such nice things after a few weeks working...)
Love this leunig cartoon - I am sure everyone does this, I get little care parcels from Australia to keep me sane...

Then I have a friend who is crazy, she hasn't sent me anything recently and in typical cartoonist form, doesn't have a website, so I post a taste and ferret around the house to find one of her actual social commentaries.

She is trying very hard to get published too... it is not easy. She is prolific though!

It was the name of an exhibition in South Australia (touring) called The Dark Woods. Her name is Mandy Ord... she is a funny creature. I guess that is what makes her comics interesting, and I don't just say that because I am an old friend of hers.

Your friend, Mandy Ord, is very talented. Only a matter of time before she finds a publishing avenue, I'm sure.

I hope so - she works so hard!
I wonder where the little slacker is?
I fear one day that I am going to read something of hers and see some hideous characture of myself doing something dumb - but she tends to just laugh at herself. Or with herself as the case may be.
