bernie, in a statement issued by the white house the printing of the banner was indeed paid for by the white house.
"Wednesday, press secretary Scott McClellan admitted the White House had the "Mission Accomplished" banner made. But he said it was only to praise the Lincoln's mission -- not to herald a triumphant end to all fighting in Iraq.

That's the problem with the Navy (George? where are you?) -- they are so arrogant, so self-advertising, and they LIE! If Bush were a proper leader, he'd get rid of the Navy altogether. And let's keep an eye on the rest of 'em, too, like those milit'ry fellas in Lebanon who Built An Entire TV Set just to give the public snippets of (probably false) information...

"Mission Accomplished" did not mean "The War is over", no matter how many times The Left says that is what was meant. What actually was said includes the following excerpts:
Quote:
Transcript

Thank you. Thank you all very much.

Admiral Kelly, Captain Card, officers and sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans, major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.

And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country ... We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We're bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous.[/color] ...
... We are helping to rebuild Iraq where the dictator built palaces for himself instead of hospitals and schools.

And we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by and for the Iraqi people.

The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq ...
... Our war against terror is proceeding according to the principles that I have made clear to all.

Any person involved in committing or planning terrorist attacks against the American people becomes an enemy of this country and a target of American justice.

Any person, organization or government that supports, protects or harbors terrorists is complicit in the murder of the innocent and equally guilty of terrorist crimes. Any outlaw regime that has ties to terrorist groups and seeks or possesses weapons of mass destruction is a grave danger to the civilized world and will be confronted.

And anyone in the world, including the Arab world, who works and sacrifices for freedom has a loyal friend in the United States of America ...

...The use of force has been and remains our last resort. Yet all can know, friend and foe alike, that our nation has a mission: We will answer threats to our security, and we will defend the peace.

Our mission continues. Al Qaida is wounded, not destroyed. The scattered cells of the terrorist network still operate in many nations and we know from daily intelligence that they continue to plot against free people. The proliferation of deadly weapons remains a serious danger.

The enemies of freedom are not idle, and neither are we. Our government has taken unprecedented measures to defend the homeland and we will continue to hunt down the enemy before he can strike.

The war on terror is not over, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide.

No act of the terrorists will change our purpose, or weaken our resolve, or alter their fate. Their cause is lost; free nations will press on to victory.

Now while those remarks may not be what some wish to remember, they are what was said. One phase of a long, arduous, peril-filled task was accomplished, and a new, equally dangerous, arduous, and critical phase, of unknowable duration but certain outcome, has begun.

Its fine with me if The Left wishes to try to manufacture issues where no issue exists. What that demonstrates to me, and to many other folk, is that The Democrats have no grasp of the real issues.

BINGO! Give the man a seeegar!

And I suspect they are also headed for a rude awakening in 2004. I wonder whether they will try to complain that they "should have won" every race they lose this time. (Why not?)

The real issues? We have a president who dresses up as a fighter pilot to declare premature victory at a media event, and you want the DEMS to talk about real issues?

It is to laugh...

The real issue is that The Dems claim a premature victory was declared when in fact a successful battle, just one event in a yet-to-be concluded, long and dangerous struggle was acknowledged.

And while its really immaterial, I'd like to mention that the waste and partisanship of the "Lets Lynch Clinton" circus apalled and embarrased me ... almost as much as that scoundrel's having had the arrogance and effrontery to lie under oath, regardless why he was under oath. His impeachment was richly deserved and his consequences were so light as to make a mockery of every branch of government.

Has anyone noticed that Timber's style has become rather like the portentous tones of Walter Cronkite? I once watched Cronkite get drunk in a restaurant in Maine. Not a pretty sight.
