Ahnold may be losing ground, but what is most disturbing is that over thirty percent still hasn't committed; that means we still don't know who the winner will be. Ahnold has name recognition; that means a lot in elections. CA is a democratic stronghold, so Bustamante has a good chance. I've been against this recall; it just throws money down the toilet. c.i.
CI: I betcha a good part of that 30% is concentrating on an effort to make sure the recall doesn't go through -- as a matter of principle. Closer to the vote, the alignments will become clearer, of course. The best possible outcome -- for the country, if not the state -- would be to have voted down the recall. I don't like that tool being handed to guys with more bucks than brains and principles!
on the other hand lets say that ahnold wins the governorship, he has few options other than raising taxes and lowering services (same as any other candidate) he will only serve until the next regular election, he is HIGHLY unlikely to solve anything and just might serve up as poster boy disaster for the state republicans and, as california goes so goes the nation (if you get my drift) but then I am an optimist
dys, That's a bad gamble; California is still the world's 5 to 7th richest. Ahnold will not accomplish too much, simply on the grounds that politics require insiders to work with you, and he has none (to very little inside support). The only thing he would have accomplished is that he can put "ex-governor of california" on his business card. c.i.
well c.i. i agree with you, but i also think Ahnold could do little harm as the CA legislature is still in control, my point was mostly that Ahnold ain't gonna fix anything within the mantra of the superstupid neo-cons be they in CA or Wash D.C.(i really don't wish any harm towards CA, my brother lives in San Diego.)
Unless Arnold comes out with some specifics, he is toast IMHO. Maybe a lot of airheads and valley girls in California, but they aren't so far gone that they allow Arnie to get by with nothing, I hope!
BTW, how are the debates coming along? This will be AS's downfall for sure.
From another thread but more applicable here:
Ahhnold is losing some ground as the Democratic base gets riled up. He may never get into details, following Ronald Reagans tactics. Lincoln said it is better to be silent and be thought of as a fool than open your mouth and prove it.
Bustamante 35%
Ahhnold 22%
If I'm not mistaken, Busamante may become our first Hispanic governor.

Scroll down and listen to an NPR report on a comparison of Arnold and Reagan. It wasn't very favorable to Arnie!
I believe Gov. Richardson of New Mexico is a Latino. (Please advise if I'm wrong.)
Getting back to presidential politics, usually reliable sources tell me that Gov. Dean's rally in Seattle last night drew his biggest crowd yet...
Wow, when did this become the California recall thread?
MediaWhoresOnline has provided the bumper sticker slogan for next year's election:
Re-Defeat Bush in 2004
Great bumper sticker, PDiddie!!
And TakeBackTheMedia.com has something for "Whistle-Ass":
c.i., there were even hispanic governors in California already - last one back in:
Quote:California's highest-ranking Latino politician since the early decades of statehood, Mr. Bustamante is positioned to make an already historic election possibly more so by becoming the state's first Hispanic governor since 1875. That year Lt. Gov. Romualdo Pacheco served the final nine months of Gov. Newton Booth's term after Booth left for the United States Senate. Though Pacheco's tenure was brief, he distinguished himself as the only California governor who ever claimed to have lassoed a grizzly bear, or so says a biography in the state's archives.

BTW, IMHO - the California recall election will be the first of many Bush defeats in the next 14months 14days!
(Shivers!) Call me paranoid, Bill, but the moment I see the turnaround in the polls, I see Rove loading his poison dart gun.
BillW, The really small difference between Pacheco and Busamante is that Busamante will be elected into the highest office of California. It's true that Lt Governor is no small feat when considered from the historical viewpoint of the country back in the 19th century. c.i.
I didn't know about Pacheco, because I'm not quite that old.
