Dogs and Cats in Bars and (Outdoor) Restaurants

So what sayeth you? Have you been to a bar or ate a restaurant with outdoor seating where pets (specifically dogs and/or cats) are allowed?

In NYC, cats are also allowed in bodegas (to help control possible mice infestations).

@tsarstepan,
In a lot of Cafes here the question kind of gets begged by wild birds. Because of the climate, a lot of places here are open to the outside. Pigeons and sparrows have wised up to this and have begun coming inside for food scraps.

I don't like this because I know they are covered with lice and are pretty dirty generally....but there's not a lot anyone can do.

Lots of places with footpath or courtyard dining seem happy with dogs. Many have water bowls for them. I'm happy with that. I think Sebastian would be very happy to come to a place like that on a leash and I don't think anyone would mind...but the dogs would probably try to chase him and that would create a drama.

I'm happy with animals in outside areas.

So far I have seen dogs getting something to drink at restaurants and cafees, but i never seen one getting drunk.
I have see dogs getting something to eat too, but never have I heard them loudly yell and complain about the snack.
I saw one restaurant which did not allow a blind woman taking her dog into the restaurant.
Are dogs allowed, should children be there, how about handicapped?
No smoking outdoor,
If this continues we will end up discussing if we should eat in restaurants

The Flying Star restaurants here in Albuquerque generally have outdoor areas and dogs are welcome; there are places on the posts holding the overhead(s) to latch the dog and its leash to comfortably. Oh, and our favorite version of that local restaurant chain has a nice somewhat roaring fireplace going in Winter; that's nice too, for humans or cold dogs.

In the two years I spent in Germany, there were dogs in nearly every restaurant I visited. Better behaved than many of the children I see around here, anyway

@tsarstepan,
Not only have I been to them - but I have brought my furry friend.

There are a couple of places in Boston that have advertisements to bring your dog to an outdoor bar area one night a week - we went to one a couple of times it was called yappy hour. They had free homemade dog treats. As it was enclosed and my dog is trained well - we let him roam off leash - when we wouldn't give him any treats he wandered away from us and I caught him begging to some couple that were feeding him treats. He made more friends than we did.

We also have traveled with him on planes across the country - Carmel is a great dog friendly place - restaurants there have a doggie menu (most allow them indoors in the restaurants as well as in the outdoor seating). He even visited Tiffany's

Just like children - I think the parents need to know if their children/pets are well behaved enough to go out to dinner and when to remove them when they mis-behave.

@tsarstepan,
And for those that do like to travel with their dog - here is a website put together to let you know where are dog friendly places.

@Linkat,
I used a site similar to that when I travelled/moved from northern California to New Mexico. That was great and I liked all the places; quite a relief not to worry about Pacco being accepted.

Probably time for me to activate one of my Pacco avatars again..

In a number of places there are cat cafés or cat pubs, where the presence of cats is an attraction.

There's one in Bristol, UK

And a number of cat cafés in Wales

There are lots in Asia, mainly Japan, and I know of one in Oakland, California. There are issues around food hygiene and animal welfare but these can be got right.

@Tes yeux noirs,
I've long loved having cats in bookstores. I'm quite cat allergic, but hey, a little allergy I can take for the pleasure of their company (just not all the time).

Where I live there are lots of restaurants that are dog friendly as far as outside seating, but not inside.

I've also seen scuffles break out between dogs, and not physical, but "verbal" arguments.

It's common sense to allow dogs outside if it is properly monitored, but I don't think letting a non service dog inside is appropriate.

In NYC, the distinction can be muddled (but still defined to some degree). Though it's pretty rare, I've been to at least two bars that allow dogs inside. They don't necessarily serve food but food is eaten there. One of the bars had picnic food inside. Explicitly restaurants only allow dogs at outdoor tables.

I am surprised that I haven't seen any service dogs in restaurants ever in my 14 years in NYC. I would think that if I had, I'd remember that pretty clearly.

@tsarstepan,
Brooklyn's First Permanent Cat Cafe Coming To Brooklyn Heights

Cat cafes are a big thing (flash in the kitty litter pan?) in Asia (South Korea and Japan). Looks like they're taking off here in the US.

Several years ago I took a Sunday morning walk on sidestreets in New York City.
Walked by a cheese store with cheeses in the window. On one cheese sat a cat.
Good no mice in that store.
Look on the bright side of life.

@saab,
Plus, the cheese clearly gets that cat's personal seal of approval!
