"My Fair Lady" for when I'm depressed. When Audrey Hepburn walks down those stairs.....
"SmokeSignals" for the real life of Native Americans - a very intelligent film. The kid playing Thomas (Evan Adams?)...that's acting!
"Triumph of the Will" for a nightmarish look back that may make you wonder if history isn't repeating itself. Leni Riefenstahl, where are you when you are needed again?

Setanta

Just checked out the reviews for True Romance, as I hadn't heard of it before.
Looks good! Will definitely try to rent it.

While I've been recovering from a pretty unpleasant virus I've taken the opportunity to catch up on some movies I missed, from my couch. The most impressive of the rather mixed bag I chose was Far from Heaven. What an engrossing experience! The plot was very involving, great acting & the fabulous colour! I was totally knocked out by the experience.

What seems a particularly "typical" healthy, fulfilling '50's marriage, except things are not what they seem. The husband is actually gay & agrees to undertake "treatment" to become "normal" & save his marriage. In the meantime his wife befriends her black gardener, an intelligent man who believes that relationships/friendships between black & white people are possible. The consequences for all 3 are devastating & they discover how intolerant their supposedly enlightened town actually is. Quite a haunting film & a beautiful reproduction of '50s society, right down to the gorgeous '50s colour! I loved it!

Hmm - I'd start a thread on it, cos I love it so - but my threads on such things seem to be under a bit of a curse at present - so I shall lie low...

I have a copy of "A Time for Drunken Horses" sitting on my coffee table. I haven't had time to watch it, but it looks like it has potential.

An old soap-operatic film, The Cardinal, starring Tom Tryon, and directed by Otto Preminger, is a stark contrast to the current turmoil in the U.S. Catholic church.

Watched a real dud last night, in my exhausted state after work. A film called Adaptation, about a writer trying to write a film script. Downright silly & far fetched! Rolling Eyes What a bomb!
