@oralloy,
I read elsewhere on A2K that the new site should be ready in about 1 year.

I guess, the fee would buy you extra benefits on the site.

A US forum that I was moderating had a "premium" membership that cost a fee. The fee simply gave access to areas and priveliges that non-paying members missed out on.

There has to be a payoff. Like not wading through SPAM for one.

@Builder,
There will be a lot of feature benefits but the main one is to support the community ecosystem. The subscription revenue would be divided between the platform (which pays for all the infrastructure costs), the community managers and the content creators (every topic and post author).

So when the new system launches, those who choose (it will be entirely optional and using the site will always be free) to subscribe will be making microdonations to the communities they patronize with every vote. This revenue will be dedicated to not only covering the platform costs but rewarding the users who drive the communities: the community managers and content creators.

@bobsal u1553115,
No, what does DU stand for? Can you provide a link. I'm not saying such moderating can't work, just that I think something is sacrificed by it. You or others may not notice what has been lost.

@bobsal u1553115,
I agree that some things should be banned and calling someone a term that is readily recognized as a crude obscenity like the "c" word is one of those things. I get nervous when people say they want to ban "misogyny" or "racism" not because I favor either but because there, currently, is too broad a range of actions or comments being termed one or the other. It's not necessary to determine if a person who has called a member a foul world is, in addition to being a crude lout, also a bigot or a woman hater. Ban the unacceptable behavior not unacceptable thought and there won't be a problem with someone being banned for subjective reasons.

All of the things you suggest should be banned can be clearly warned against and clearly identified when they occur. Banning them is not like banning "racism".

@FBM,
I googled some time ago, when I first saw the letters DU. I've no idea if I'm interested in it, being a news addict that needs to get a life already.

I didn't look at it to any extent, and I mean any extent, just saw a few headlines. On moderation, I think I get Robert's planning. I don't know what I want myself, not knowing enough re how it will evolve. I will avoid some, and take that choice back sometime later, possibly, as I have done that even recently with someone long avoided. I haven't been harassed as such, so I'd probably not block, but I would like the option to be there on the site, it makes good sense.

My own irritation is regarding repetitive arguments ad infinitum, or approaching so, and what I think of as insulturamas. On the other hand, I don't mind straightforward or curt, and I don't want to be in a realm of daisy fields.

Carry on..

Excuse me Finn but our society is working diligently to remove misogyny and racism from our culture.
I'm gonna work hard to combat it on A2k;never mind the free speech mumbo jumbo.
How many women have posted a misogynistic post?
How many blacks, orientals Africans etc have posted a racist post?
Right.
None
This is the realm of the middle-aged white men that make up the majority of the posters on A2k.
You'll not see women here posting that stuff.
I've always had engaging discussions with you Finn, but when you start trying to protect misogynistic and racist posters in the name of free speech...I get nervous.

@Robert Gentel,
Putting aside the fact that you get to set the rules and enforce them as you see fit regardless of what I or anyone thinks about it, I don't have a problem forbidding calling other members names that have been ruled verboten. I would have a problem with generally banning homophobia. While bobsal says he didn't find any of my hypothetical comments offensive, we both know that there are people in the wider world and probably in this forum who would and who would also consider them to be evidence of misogyny.

I don't know that I have ever read the TOS, and I don't know how any member is expected to know that calling someone a fag is grounds for suspension so I can't comment on whether his suspension is fair. Does the person called a fag have to be gay to invoke the suspensions? Ann Coulter infamously called a straight man a fag but I can't recall his name. Would she have been suspended for that?

Look, I'm not the guy's champion. It just seems to me that there are other members who are as bad or worse than him, and who don't seem to attract your attention and ire. Maybe you've suspended them too. Your not under any obligation to announce suspensions.

I'm just commenting on what I observe. If the rules appear to be selectively enforced, I for one will have no respect for them. It doesn't mean I will flaunt them, but it's just another factor coloring the experience here which can lead to the conclusion it's not worth hanging around.

Everyone has to and is making that determination based on their own set of criteria.

@Finn dAbuzz,
Have you read the rape thread? At least four of us who had been raped posted, to my view bravely, including a long time poster who had been raped and harmed a lot re tearing up of her body, at four years old. The followup was disgusting to the many women that some posters here dismissed. I left the thread, or didn't read or post much after that, so I didn't follow over the years.

Some of these same people, by their dismissal, sent away quite a number of people on a2k, immediately or gradually.

They are still yelling now, the most vociferous.

@Finn dAbuzz,
I think you might be worrying about things that will never happen. As far as calling some a 'fag', that would get you a reprimand in my old work place, if you were a person's supervisor and called them a 'fag' it would be a bigger penalty and could get you removed from your management position. Using slurs like that contribute to a hostile work environment, and that causes all kinds of problems. Ann Coulter called John Edwards gay, I don't remember the 'fg' comment but Ann has the instincts of a viper, she called the widows of first responders 'harpy's" after 9/11. Then again, Ann gets off on being a total jerk.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but wouldn't you be slightly repulsed if you overheard co-workers refer to someone a fg? What if someone called a friend of your daughter the 'f' word, and you probably wouldn't want your daughter to toss it around either.

I really doubt Robert has the time or inclination to search out offensive words on the forum. He already stated that a member complained that Hawkeye persistently called some a 'fg'. I don't see very much of what Hawkeye posts and I don't know who he is insulting with the 'fg' slur. I don't read very many of your posts either but I'd be willing to bet that you aren't calling anyone a 'fg'.

Damn, I've just repeated a word I never use far too many times, I need to throw up.

If the rules are selectively applied that's one thing but just like real life law enforcement not every single crime is punished and you could construe that as "selective enforcement" if you were an unreasonable sort.

There may well be members who have used similar slurs, I don't know. I don't read every post on the site and make no promise to. However if brought to my attention i will treat them all equally.

I'm not so sure about that. That word has been replaced by Asian. Maybe its no longer accepted but I've never heard anyone called someone a damned oriental.

How can a word be "racist?" Have you just called Panz a racist? That's quite the conclusion you've come to, if so. And it was all so easy. You didn't even have to ask! You knew, because you're up with all the current PC "laws." If only others were so well-informed, then they wouldn't be racists.

Not only in Germany but in the USA as well, there are Oriental Institutes at universities, people are studying orientalistic to become orientalists ...

@Walter Hinteler,
I have heard that some orientals don't like the word because it means "east." The question then becomes "east of what." The answer to that presumes a "starting point," a center from which everything follows.

My response is, "yeah, so?"
