This isn't the only problem. One long time member , when things aren't going his/her way on a specific thread, GATHERS his/her troops to join him/her in the fight, by either posting on the thread or merely, just hitting the down button, numerous times. Five friends = five hits down.

Best solution? Remove the up/down button...

@ehBeth,
mags was just about my favorite Abuzzer, I am dyslexia challenged and I had a lot of trouble with her forum after "Buzzard's roost". But I still read the updates I get from its latest iteration.

@izzythepush,
Editing the title and part of a cartoon out, so that it becomes impossible to understand the joke and its intention, is a blatant form of misrepresentation. Depicting satire of racism as racism is a form of misrepresentation, too.

@bobsal u1553115,
You could try and understand that leftist, for a change, rather than just closing your ears to what he says. You could also try and avoid insulting my mother. That'd be nice...

The down button gives the community a way to show our collective disapproval for particularly racist, sexist, or otherwise abominable ideas. Most of us have been voted down at some point and it isn't great, but the button serves a purpose.

@Kolyo,
There will likely be a setting for community managers to decide if their community has the votes. But it will definitely stay as a feature as it's an important part of letting the users give censure or praise to posts and without it there will be a greater call for top-down intervention and censorship.

Will Kicky still be President?

No its not. Don't the French have a concept of "too soon". Wouldn't you be upset with American TV sit-com humor based on the French reaction to your recent real attacks by ISIS? Sort of a "Hogan's Heroes" meets "Benny Hill".

Seriously. There is no humor whatsoever reducing a people or a person to an amusing ape/monkey/chimp. Maybe you can't grasp that, but that is just the way it is. That particular image has about the same visceral effect as any verbal epitaph you may recall. I am appalled you just don't get it.

@Olivier5,
1. No one gets to spout non-sense just because they self identify with some sort of general set of rationalizations they chose categorize as "leftist".

You know the two positions we totally disagree about. I don't see any sort of politicization in either of them. You can blather on about them all you want.

2. I have never, ever bared any sort of ill words of or about your dear sainted mother. I'm sure you're a much bigger disappointment to her than you are to me.

What kind of gentleman, "leftist" or not tosses a wonderful, vibrant, kind, dear person as is your own mother into a hair-pull regarding the over the top Charlie Hebdo cartoons and whether or not depicting a specific person of color as a monkey is racist or not. Of course I do not know your wonderful mother, but I wager she agrees with me about the racist quality of the monkey picture. Where does she stand with Marine Le Pen?

@Olivier5,
Here we go again. I didn't edit anything out. I got the image off the net. And has been pointed out on more than one occasion it wouldn't make any difference. The image is racist, and no amount of captioning alters that.

If anyone is doing the misrepresentation it's you, making out Charlie Hebdo was some bunch of secular saints when some of the stuff they did was quite grubby. As Bob says, that doesn't mean they deserved what happened, but it doesn't mean we should rewrite history either.

You really have a poker stuffed right up your arse don't you? First the knob gag, and now your racist cartoons. How long ago was that, I forget, but you've been letting it fester all this time. Just let it drop, nobody else is worried about the size of your knob, and people can make their own minds up about Charlie Hebdo without being harangued by you.

You can't make a decision about something, or someone, based on politics alone. OmSigDavid was as right wing as they come but I really like him.

If you've ever been sat in the kitchen at an SWP "party" listening to a couple of comrades going hammer and tongs over whose interpretation of Trotsky was correct, with only a can of special brew for comfort, you know that just because someone is a leftie doesn't mean they're not a tedious arsehole.

Sometimes I need to take a rest from some other posters, so I put them on Ignore. Many times I take them off of Ignore when my mood has improved, my tolerance wider, my sense of humor more in place that day.

I'm supposing we'll still be able to do that in the communities that use Ignoring as an option.. just wanted to post to say I like the retractibility of the present ignore system.

@bobsal u1553115,
Disagreeing with you is different from "spouting nonsense". I try to make sense, most of the times. Whether you agree or not is a different question. Who is right, when you and i disagree, is yet another question.

There is a clear political dimension in Charlie Hebdo, which is a ultra-left (but not totally wacko) publication and a long-time champion in the fight against racism. The edited version of one of their cartoon, shared on A2K by izzy, originates in a manipulation of the cartoon by the French extreme right , neo-soddin-nazis that izzy and you are therefore helping spead a lie.

All that is quite political. It's a minefield called French politics, which you guys entered with blissful ignorance of the traps involved. In fact, ignorance is your only excuse.

Your do know however that Charlie has been victim of an odious terrorist attack, and that a minimum sense of decency and respect to facts is required of he who wants to scrutinise the victims, and ask whether or not they deserved what they got.

You did insult my dear mother, who's not a saint but has enough sense to love and respect our Minister of Justice -- Christiane Taubira, depicted in the infamous cartoon -- Taubira who VERY POLITICALLY supported Charlie Hebdo to this day and attended the funerals of one of the victims.

You could do worse than imitate my dear mother... Christiane knows best.

I've hatched a couple of forums(fora?) over the years (one is still going) and moderated one of the more active US boards (now defunct).

What is happening here is pretty-much what happens everywhere, even in actual life; familiarity breeds contempt. It's that simple.

And these places are magnets for narcissists, who rarely deal well with any kind of negativity. You're either with them totally, or a mortal enemy you become.

On the dog-piling issue, that also occurs almost everywhere as well. Rounding up supporters to champion your cause is basic human nature.

All-in-all, these places are rather interesting to watch, occasionally.

@Olivier5,
Yes. I agree.

Bobsal and Izzy, people I listen to, are, to me, off base on this.

I take it Charlie knew the woman in the monkey cartoon and she wasn't angry about it, got it (not sure, and am not going to search).

Demonizing Olivier is misguided.

All this is off topic.. (or is it?)
