@Lash,
Democracy can often appear to be like the old "burn her, she's a witch" days.

I'm aware of those people (here) who are regularly grating on people's nerves. I either choose to engage them, or I choose to not engage them.

I like having that choice.

@Lash,
Unless i misunderstand, one would only be barred from that community. That's what i would see as a "no skin off my nose" situation. I don't think you'd get bounced altogether unless you were being a jerk all over the site.

@Lash,
Also, i'm sure, at least initially, there would be quite a few "preaching to the choir" groups. That kind of thing, though, would not produce threads with legs. You know, kind of like an atheist church . . . what would you have to talk about?

Oh my, I wasn't sure if cav was still among the living, I had hoped he was alive just posting elsewhere. Thanks for telling me. Rest in Peace cav fancier. Now I really must clean up my profile.

I wonder if teenyboone and magginkat are still posting somewhere.

@Setanta,
That's what I foresee as well. Certainly lots of nice topic-driven yarns devolving to digressions and game threads- much like we have now- but as soon as different opinions emerge on a politically-oriented thread, the dissenter is dispatched.

I suppose everyone will hold court in their own antiseptic fiefdom.

I will be happy to see Edgar. He did leave to avoid one particular asshole. I will create an Edgar haven. 😃

Jeebus, there's only ten million stars within view. And a history of this planet, including the invasion of the arthropods to consider....

I think some of the people who have complained in this thread fear that they either would start communities to which no one would come, or that they would join communities in which they would be blocked or get bounced. I would probably be better off--i only come here because i'm doing something else online, so it would not be a loss.

Makes me nervous to hear of an 'urgent need for change' on a site that I can't see any significant problem with.

More mobile friendly? fine.
More admin 'weeding' of problematic members? Don't see the need. Assholes are self evident and easily ignored.

Don't screw up a good thing admin. Whoever you are.

Seems to me that there'll be no problem with people disagreeing, even vehemenetly so. It's easy to tell someone that they don't know **** about a subject without calling that person a shithead or whatever. Anyway, my understanding is that the only people in danger of genuine expulsion would be those whose very persona is repeatedly wrapped up in punching buttons and pissing others off. They're not hard to spot, actually, but it's damn hard to make a set of narrowly defined rubrics that everyone would agree on. I don't know much at all about the mod staff or policies here, but from what I've read of Robert Genteel, I would trust him to make that call.

Never seen you come up with anything that, even with the loosest of definitions, could be considered an idea. You're a sensationalist, you try to shock, your racism, your misogyny, your unwanted exposes of your sex life and your "socialism" are just you trying to provoke a response and kid yourself that you've actually got something to say.

@izzythepush,
Not sulking, just keeping tabs on posters, trying to remember who they are... It's a far lesser crime than willingly misrepresenting what people say, which is what you do here day in and day out.

I don't think Hawkeye is trying to annoy people. He seems to me to be trying to challenge popularly-held ideas that he believes might be wrong. I don't think he is trolling.

It also seems to me that, if anyone cannot stand Hawkeye's ideas, they could simply use your new super-duper ignore switch on him.

If you make it super easy for people to avoid Hawkeye, and they still complain about the things he writes, those complaints seem a bit disingenuous to me.

If Max starts a community for civil discussion, I'll definitely join it.

I doubt I'll start my own community because the thought of being responsible for all that moderation sends chills up my spine. I'm lazy and I like being lazy.

Excellent! That will in fact solve the problem with down-voting, i.e. just block the six or seven little cretins who vote most of my posts down to zero before anybody gets to see them, and the problem pretty much goes away.

Ideally yes. But it won't protect against a sockpuppet account unless you can figure out what the sockpuppet account is.

My understanding is that the original reason why voting was developed for internet messageboards is because lots of people were posting "me too" messages to indicate agreement with someone, and threads were getting flooded with an endless sea of "me too" posts.

If there is an option for these new member groups where, instead of a grand tally of votes, there was just a list of the names of the people who agreed with that post, that would fit the spirit of the original idea of letting people express their agreement with a post. And it would undercut sockpuppet abuse. If a post had a list of names that no one had ever heard of, it would be clear that none of the supposed agreement was coming from established posters.

@glitterbag,
Magginkat has a forum of her own.

Next time I get an update from it I'll pass the address onto you.

Haven't been on for a long time, but there was an almost 100% former Abuzz membership on it.

Actually, just google magginkat, she has a huge presence.
