Where is he going whit this?

There was never anything serious between us because I wasn't ready and I pushed him away so he stopped talking to me. Now, after 2 years, he contacted me again to ask me how I`m doing, which really surprised me because it was out of nowhere. He still messages me from time to time but he never says anything specific and sometime sends some pretty random stuff, like thumbs up or memes that don`t really make sense. He usually asks how or what I`m doing. I can`t make out where is he going whit this?
