Is A2K's membership politically biased?

Reply Fri 16 Jul, 2004 07:09 am
There have been many comments from those leaning to the right, left or even just down the middle that A2K's Polictics threads are dominated by people 'from the other side'.

Perhaps a poll can shed some light on this? Rate yourself on a scale of 1 (Far-Left) to 10 (Far-Right)

I'm not really looking for anything else here, just your votes.

Feel free to post whatever you want.

EDITS

I've edited the title in response to Nick's post below. I am not questioning the impartiality of the Hamsters and the others who work here behind the scenes. I do not post often enough in Politics to have an opinion on that matter. I'll leave THAT poll to someone braver than I...

I've also changed 'Communist' and 'Facsist' into 'Far-Left' and 'Far-Right' as my original terms were apparently inaccurate.

I do notice that A2K has a tendency to pull threads that it finds disagreeable even if they are not profane or overly controversial. I suspect this may be one of them but I may be wrong. Tell me I'm wrong A2K Moderators! Then I shall retract my statement.

The Mods only pull threads that violate the Terms of Service. It has nothing to do with what may or may not be controversial or personally disagreeable to the Mods. The TOS is the set of rules we play by.

But I don't think Grand Duke was intending the question to be about A2K "the site". I think he was referring to the total collection of users that are here in it's entirely.

I don't think that A2K is politically biased. I think that we have political thought here that runs across the entire spectrum. What I think is that there are quite a few members who fall into the A.B.B. category, and they tend to be very vocal.

Also, I listed myself as somewhat right of center, in your poll. I really don't think that it is an entirely accurate depiction of me, and a few other members who come to mind. I am extremely conservative economically, and extremely liberal socially, which would put me into the libertarian category. You have offered no choice that would characterize us appropriately.

Apologies, Phoenix. Do you think 2 seperate polls would give a truer picture? And could you explain "A.B.B" for me please? It's not a term I am familiar with.

Noddy, Laughing

I'm still not certain why some threads get pulled, but I guess it's not mine to reason why. I didn't vote, however.

"A.B.B." = "Anybody But Bush", a notion the subscribers to which are in great, even preponderant, evidence hereabouts. Also a notion which tends to tilt some who otherwise might better be characterized as centrist toward the left.

Personally, while I generally subscribe to the right side of the force ( Laughing ), my core feeling is that the prime functions of federal government as established by our constitution are to provide for national security, expedite commerce both domestic and international, and to prevent either the majority or the minority from imposing tyrannies favoring their own particular interests. We pretty much ain't there yet.

I suppose I would characterize myself as a Jeffersonian Democrat with Libertarian leanings. That by default makes me a Republican with reservations.

I have no real idea where I should put myself on the scale. My views are a mix from both ends of the spectrum.

I'll probably just keep on voting for whoever is not in power, as it seems to be the best policy for me.

For the record ABB no longer is relevant. It only prescribed to the notion of ANY Democrat winning the nomination would be better then Bush. Therefore ABB isn't relevant in terms of the election. If anyone would be saying that at this point it would Republicans switching or Independents. It has nothing to do with Democrats any longer since Kerry got the nod.

As far as I can see the message board itself is unbiased. I always find people bitching about the "partistanship" of a political message board. I've not seen glaring examples of the moderators abusing their powers and the posters vary.

I agree with Bi-Polar Bear and I think he's a dumb ass.

Hmmm, that's a rather knotty conundrum.

It's really very simple. If I agree with you, then you're a dumb ass. But then that would mean that you don't agree with you. And then I couldn't agree with you, so that would make me a dumb ass. But then I would agree with you, and so...

Wow, this is a stumper. Better lay on another pot of coffee. I have a feeling this is gonna' take a while.

Perhaps A2K most appropriately might be characterized as a "Conundruminium"

I voted "4", for the record. I'm a big fan of Tony Blair and his 3rd way approach - left leaning but not a socialist - that's me.

I suspect that by US standards, I'd be closer to 3...I'd put Bush about 7 on my view of the scale.

Grand Duke, this poll does not make political sense.

The opposite of Communist is not facist. You are taking two different political scales and putting them on one linear scale, thereby eliminating the opposite extreme of each of your scale's extremes.

The opposite of facist would be libertarian, this is a scale of the degree of governmental control.

The fiscal opposites on right/left would be socialist/capitalist.

For example, both your extremes are often the same thing as they are on different scales. See North Korea's government, it's on both ends of your poll.
