Text of Elizabeth Edwards' Speech
Text of Elizabeth Edwards' Speech

By The Associated Press

Text of Elizabeth Edwards' speech Wednesday night to the Democratic National Convention, as transcribed by e-Media, Inc.:

I'm Elizabeth Edwards, and tonight I am the very proud mother of Cate Edwards.

John and I have been truly blessed with a beautiful and strong family. And we're blessed, too, by you, our great Democratic family.

You have no idea how great you all look from right here.

This has been quite a year for John and for me. We started last January crisscrossing America, talking about how, with determination and vision and optimism, we can end the injustice of two Americas.

And this January, it's going to end when we move two great friends, two great Americans, John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry, into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Teresa represents the victory of spirit and will over tyranny and tragedy, and she will be the most generous first lady in the history of this country. I am so honored to stand with her.

John Kerry was in the Navy and so was my father. I grew up traveling around the world, living on Navy bases. But I always knew I was home when I saw the American flag.

Like John Kerry, my father fought for this country. Like John Kerry, he was decorated, risking his life in her service.

My father had another thing in common with John Kerry and with so many of the uniformed men and women across this country and around the world: He has the right stuff.

I married a man with the right stuff, too.

He found his own way to serve.

In his community, he was the driving force behind two after-school centers that meet the needs of young people. He was Santa Claus to needy families and, when that wasn't enough, to an entire inner-city child care center. You know, he even looks dashing in a Santa suit.

In youth activities, he did what so many Americans do: giving up their weekends and evenings to coach young people in basketball and soccer, in his church, in urban ministers, in his prayer groups, and for 20 years in his work, fighting for those who could not fight for themselves.

It never mattered how powerful the opponent. It never mattered how entrenched the interest. If the cause was just, and his voice was needed, he was there.

And now he serves the great state of North Carolina in the United States Senate, still fighting for those who count on him to be their voice.

Using his intellect and his eloquence, he has fought to improve our health care choices and to protect our environment.

And he called attention to the threat of terrorism before Sept. 11.

You know, I married the smartest, toughest, sweetest man I know. And in two days, we will celebrate 27 years of marriage.

The way we always do. We'll do it the way we always do at Wendy's.

Whether it's Wendy's or Washington, I've found that it's true: It's not where you go, it's who you go with.

But none of the things I've mentioned are the reason that I married John Edwards. I married him because he was the single-most optimistic person that I have ever known.

He knew there was a brighter day ahead, even as he swept the floors in the cotton mill as a high school student.

He knew if he worked hard enough, he could be the first in his family to go to college.

He knew that he could outwork and out-tough any battalion of lawyers to find justice. And he continued that fight in Washington, courageously, eloquently, with one simple goal: to make the opportunities of America available to all Americans.

We deserve leaders who allow their faith and moral core, our faiths and moral core to draw us closer together, not drive us farther apart. We deserve leaders who believe in each of us and fight for all of us. My rock, my love, and your next vice president, John Edwards.

Aww, thats sweet.

And I do think - I must admit - that it was kinda weird that Theresa did not seem to have anything comparably sweet or loving to say about her guy - if my memory doesnt fail me. Only thing she praised about him was his politics. Isnt that a bit strange?

If my loved one would be having her moment of glory - the one moment where she is presented to all the world (well, kinda), to finally be granted the respect and sympathy she deserves - I mean, for sure I would make certain to let everyone know how special she was! Hell, I'd do that for Anastasia, my ex - and for several good friends - this is their moment, their one big break, how could you not be gushing?

Odd, that. Perhaps I'm too young. Too young to imagine how it is for a 65-year old into a second marriage, the first partner and true love having died, that something like that just doesnt come as easily anymore ... I mean, I can argue why it wouldnt, but I still cant imagine it.

Not that its not a total non-issue .. I mean, it is. None of it has any bearing, imo, on whether Kerry should be President or not or whether he'd be any good at it.

and the opposing opinion - mine. That bit by Elizabeth Edwards made me cringe, wince, go ichhhhhhhh - that's awful! I liked her, and how she spoke, and then ackkkkkkkkkkkk. I found it a bit tasteless and inappropriate - but I come from the Limestone City.

Cate was classically lovely, and I got a stubborn lump in my throat when Edwards mentioned Wade among the children he was proud of...with no other distinction.

Kerry's daughters are physically unattractive IMO (as if that matters), but are reportedly smart and personally ambitious.

Therese Heinz Kerry - creepy
Yes, she seems creepy to me. I missed her speech at the convention (not sorry about that), but listened to John's LENGTHY speech, and the whole time Therese acted bored and indifferent to her husband. I have been a Republican my whole life (I might get some flack for that), and the first half-hour of John's speech I thought 'We might have a new President.' But - he talked toooo long and the more he talked the less I liked what he had to say - just more bullshit politics. He might have been a great soldier and a great father and he seems like a very personable guy. But, President"? I don't think so. I think he will probably make mince meat of Bush during the debates cuz poor George is not a good orator. As for Edwards - I really liked him until I heard him speak at the convention. He was on rote - typical lawyer speak (sorry about that). Also - I don't think Kerry really likes him. Edward has a great persona - great looking, with a killer smile - but, after that -
what?

Hey jdancer2, thanks for your take on that - good to hear how a Republican who was almost kinda swayed for a little while there sees it. We kinda miss the "persuadable" voter's take on things here, most people here have long made their mind up! Welcome to A2K.

Too bad that I don't like John Kerry. I think that Theresa Kerry is a pip. I roared when she said, "shove it"! That's my kind of gal. I much prefer a woman who speaks her mind, rather than a Stepford wife like Laura Bush!

I liked her saying "shove it" but I didn't like the fact that she denied saying what she said. Unless she forgot her exact words, which I've certainly done myself, she should have just said "yeah, that's what I said, now shove it"!

Suzie
Suzy, Teresa denied she said "un-American activites" as claimed by the scum bag. She actually said "un-American traits." So there is nothing for her to admit to.

No, I saw it on the first news report. She seemed to be denying saying "unAmerican" anything. But she did use the word.

Suzy
Suzy, you would have to be old enough to remember the Joe McCarthy era as to why Teresa would react to such a distortion of what she said. Those years were a terrible moment in American history.

During her speech Sunday to the Pennsylvania delegation at the Massachusetts State House, Heinz Kerry spoke about the need to return to a time when political debate was less caustic and more productive.

''I remember a time when people in political parties in Pennsylvania talked to one another and actually got things done,'' said Heinz Kerry, whose first husband, U.S. Sen. John Heinz, R-Pa., died in a 1991 plane crash. ''We have to go back to those days when we can do things properly, for the people need it.''

She also said, ''We need to turn back some of the creeping, un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits that are coming into some of our politics.''

When Colin McNickle, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's editorial page editor, asked her to clarify what she meant by ''un-American activities,'' Heinz Kerry accused him of putting words in her mouth.

She then walked away but returned a moment later, apparently realizing whom her questioner worked for. ''Understandable,'' she said. ''You said something I didn't say. Now shove it.''
With that, she turned and left the building.

I understand why she did what she did, believe me. I also saw the entire last half of that altercation on my TV the very next morning.
She said "I did not say 'unAmerican'" a couple of times. He kept insisting that, indeed she did, and she repeated "I did not say unAmerican". She may have meant "unAmerican activities" but that's not what she said to the reporter. She simply claimed that she did not use the word unAmerican, period. I saw it with my own eyes.

It's always been amazing to me that reporters even spell someone's name right let alone get the facts straight -- I would not doubt that this particular reporter is guilty as charged. If we find him lying in the streets of Boston with a microphone up his ass I don't think THK will have done it. He's a bullseye for any rational thinking person.

Can anyone remember (without searching) any memorable quotes by Laura Bush? I don't think so. Marian the Librarian should start lookin' for a job in the private sector. A Texas library with their twenty books would be an easy job.

Teresa "my home is Mozambique" Heinz-Kerry
I do not believe I have ever experienced such a negative reaction to anyone in my entire life as I did last week to Teresa Heinz-Kerry. When she said she was from Mozambique I had to ask my husband "Is that in Iowa"?

I don't know who is running Kerry's campaign, but I gotta tell you where I'm from ---foreign first ladies can be elected, but only if they reach out to middle America and most of us speak English. I don't know what they speak in Mozambigue, but someone should have clued old Teresa in that she was in the USA and speaking 5 foreign languages doesn't mean a damn thing to us. I'm sure Teresa would be right at home with Chirac and several other world leaders. However, cozying up to anti-American politicians is not something that most Americans will see as a plus and the Chanel suit is over the top, too, as far as I'm concerned. There are lots of great American designers, maybe Teresa could find one before her next appearance. Also, I have quite a salty vocabulary myself, but even I was offended by Teresa's swearing last week. Is that how she will deal with Americans who don't agree with her, by telling us to...Well, you know what she said, no reason to repeat it here.

I'm sure the Far Left will love this loose cannon, but I have yet to speak to any American woman who can even stand to look at her. Her accent sounds french, maybe she should try to buy the France's election instead of ours. But the worst thing I can say about Teresa Heinz-Kerry is that I do not believe she has much feeling for America or Americans and Yes, I did hear her talk about loving it here, but I don't believe that at all. I think she hates America and Americans. I guess its time for me to leave my Democratic roots and head to the Republicans. As Winston Churchill said "If you are not a liberal at 30 you have no heart, but if you are not a conservative by 50 you have no brain".
