I'm so excited that Bernie may get a chance to meet the Pope, someone who shares Bernie's economic views. They also share Polish roots.

This article is an enjoyable little read - for everyone but Hillary supporters. You can tell the Pope and Bernie - and the other invited speakers - have a passion for social and economic fairness for everyone.

I hope Bernie and Pope Francis are the wave of the future. We need more leaders like them.

According to RT's correspondents, police have started releasing some of the protesters.

The sit-in comes one day after more than 400 people were arrested for participating in what has been been termed the 'Democracy Spring' movement. The organization has planned for 10 days of demonstrations and mass sit-ins at the US capitol, with day two highlighting efforts from older Americans who want to see change.

Would you be so kind as to elaborate on the current Pope's Polish heritage? I may have missed one of his grandparents or someone along the way.

@Sturgis,
That was a very kind way to point out my error.

My apologies. It was a mistake.

Hillary is in with the bosses and corporations; Bernie stands with the people.

When people characterize them as similar, here's a prime manifestation of their differences.

@Lash,
Not likely.

Regardless the change won't happen this year, which I know you want. Don't change the rules mid-game and all.

Don’t be cynical. Good things are happening. Within the last hour, for example, the Nebraska legislature voted 29 to 15 to end gerrymandering in that state and create a nine-person independent citizen commission to draw congressional and state legislative districts. The bill includes strong conflict-of-interest provisions to prevent anyone from serving who has a personal or professional stake in the outcome of the redistricting process. The bill now heads to the office of Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who hasn't yet said whether he supports it.
Congratulations to Republican Sen. John Murante of Gretna and Democratic Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha for leading the charge. And cheers to Common Cause Nebraska, the Nebraska League of Women Voters, Bold Nebraska, Nebraskans for Civic Reform, and the Nebraska Farmers Union for their work to make this happen.

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Pope Francis is not expected to grant an audience to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in Rome this week, dashing hopes that the U.S. senator could win the backing of the popular pontiff — or at least the most coveted photo-op on the planet.

A Vatican official speaking on condition of anonymity said Wednesday (April 13) that there is no meeting scheduled between the pope and Sanders, who will visit the Vatican on Friday to speak at a conference.

“We don’t expect there to be one,” the official said.

The Vatican representative did not absolutely rule out a last-minute change to the program, however, reflecting Francis’ unpredictable nature. “Never say never,” the official said.

But the debate over the pope and U.S. politics could be renewed again later this month with the announcement that Vice President Joe Biden will visit the Vatican later this month to discuss his campaign to find a cure for cancer at a conference on regenerative medicine organized by the Pontifical Council for Culture.

Ever since it was announced last week that Sanders would be coming to speak at a Vatican conference on economic justice, there has been widespread speculation about who invited Sanders; why his chief rival, Hillary Clinton, was not invited as well; and whether this would help or hurt Sanders, a secular Jew who has often praised the Roman Catholic pontiff’s stands on social issues.

But the chief spokesman at the Vatican, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, was quick to assert that the Democrat had not been invited by Francis.

Lombardi said the call came from Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences, which receives Holy See funding and is hosting the conference inside the Vatican walls.

During his visit, Sanders will give a 10-minute speech about “The Urgency of a Moral Economy,” as part of a two-day event reflecting on the 25th anniversary of a landmark encyclical by St. John Paul II.

Sanders’ arrival at the Vatican comes just days ahead of the April 19 primary in New York, a key test in the ongoing race against Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Meetings between candidates and foreign leaders are rare, and the Vatican will be cautious of the pontiff weighing in on the U.S. presidential debate. Francis has already caused a storm by describing the views of Donald Trump, a Republican candidate, as “not Christian.”

Trump’s views on immigration and his suggestion of a blanket ban on Muslims entering the U.S. have been viewed with alarm in Europe and stand at odds with Francis’ open view on migration and interfaith dialogue.

A fear of mine is that protesters, let's say the ones following allowance rules, a question in the first place, will get slammed, and then more vigorous stuff will come.

I can see this devolving, probably many do.

With this one senate endorsement vs. the 40 for Hillary, Bernie's supporters sort of remind me of the climate deniers vs. the 97% of scientists who say man-influenced global warming is real. They both look at the overwhelming majority and think "must be a conspiracy".

@snood,
Snood, I have no idea of what you are talking about. I think that is a problem in this thread, generally.
I admit to being somewhat for more for Sanders than Hillary but I have displeasure re both.

Meantime, I get to be slimed as a Bernie supporter.

I am a not a climate denier. You envelop bernie people as anti science loons.

Me, I like some of Bernies takes, certainly more than Hillary's. I also am not so enthused about him. I like him slightly better than Hillary.

The whole arguing thing on a2k is what I barely remember of kindergarten.

What I'm talking about is that Bernie got his first senator to endorse him today, and Hillaryalready has 40 Senators endorsing her. I was comparing Bernie supporters reaction to that news to climate denier's reaction to the news that 97% of scientists believe in climate change. The climate deniers say climate change is a conspiracy of corrupt government and monied interests. Bernie deniers say that those officials supporting Hillary are all corrupt and bought off. A strained analogy, I admit.
Did that help at all?
