No, and that's a very silly question.

Have you ever tried being serious for two seconds?
(Where's Pragmatic, by the way- I enjoy talking to her, and I miss her  )

I was being serious.I hate travel. It's odd that people who like travel call people silly for hating travel and people who hate travel don't call people silly for liking it.

Why would anybody like travel?

I wasn't calling you silly for saying you hated travel - in fact, I didn't call you silly at all - I said your question was silly. You asked if anyone had ever tried to hate travel. Why would anyone try to hate travel? There are things I hate about travel - it can be utterly exhausting - and I certainly don't begrudge anyone their right to hate travel- in fact I can totally understand it.

I'm feeling very fragile today for some reason. Do you think you could be nice to me?

Yeah.We often get a bit wisful in the pub.Mainly about our childhood adventures but also about our first attempted conquests. We see these young girls today who are just too easy and we shake our heads wistfully when we see their jeans and their bellies and their tattoos and we hear their coarse obscene voices feigning excitement. It's okay being wistful.Proust made a masterpiece out of wistfulness.

Is it a sad feeling for you?

Yes - and unsettling. You know I just can't settle down and concentrate on anything- and I don't really know what I want.

What are you doing today?

All sorts of things. At the moment,it seems,I'm trying to cheer you up without engaging in any phoney stuff.

I've lost count of the number of women I've heard say,"I don't really know what I want".I didn't understand it the first time and I still don't understand it now.

What's with you women?

Different brain wiring. There are lots of things to want and they conflict; some of them may be 'being a nice and helpful person' or even 'being seen as a nice and helpful person'. For men it seems more linear.

What's with you men?

I ask that question a lot.

But I do find it really sweet when they at least try to understand - don't you?

It would only be sweet if the understanding led to the question ceasing to be asked.

Do you enjoy saying "I don't really know what I want"?

No, I hate it. But it is true sometimes.

Listen - I appreciate your kindness. And don't hesitate to let me know if I can ever repay it in kind, okay?

Gotta go - talk to you later. Hope you have a good evening.

Well, I hope aidan feels better soon. I know she's a bit melancholy about her son growing up - he started driving (yesterday, I think)

I don't know what to say- thanks for your concern. I was just feeling nostalgic - but am definitely happier now.

Steve - what are you apologizing for? What's sukudo?

I hope that Steve can explain that because I can't say I know what "sukudo" means, but it sounds Japanese.

How many languages can you speak?

Only one-English. I can understand a little French - but murder it when I try to speak it. And I hate to do that as I think it's a beautiful language.

I kind of got the feeling a while back that Steve was trying to wind me up - but I really didn't understand what he was trying to say - so I just ignored it. Anyway - no harm done.

Ohhh....I hope I am. But I understand that even friends have their little spits with each other every now and then. The question then becomes whether we are such good friends that we can forgive and forget easily. yeah.

Were you born in the UK?

Laughing Okay - I'll play along. No - you'll never believe this, but I'm a native Texan. Don't worry though - no Texas twang - I know people from Britain and other places don't really enjoy a southern accent. I grew up in NJ so I have this weird combination of accents that results in no discernable accent at all. People always guess that I'm Canadian for some reason.

How about you? Do you have an Aussie accent?
