Your pragmatic side is your most normal. Your Mathos side is the most endearing - when he's in a good mood, because when he is, he's always nice to Aidan Laughing . Your EM side is just kind of out there (even in America Spendi most grown men don't say "wow" all the time). And your Spendius side is a very prickly pear - with me anyway - with others he's very accomodating.

But since we've gotten all heart to heart here today Spendius - if I could ask you even one serious question, the serious question I would ask is this: Do you realize that you will never find love from anyone, (and most appropriate would be to find it with another young law student) , if you never let your guard down, drop your "clever and witty" act and just be yourself? I really do hope I'm right about your pragmatic side, because I can see a light at the end of your tunnel of love, if that is the "real" you.

The second set of questions I would ask are: Do you give a crap? And how far off base am I?

*also want you to know that despite my sometimes harsh words - you and your gang have found a certain spot in my heart - you're always fun to talk to - except when you're angry and just out and out mean.

*Sorry to interrupt the game - but I though Spendi asking this question represented an important breakthrough.

I'm all in favour of important breakthroughs-that I am.

I like saying "wow!" and "gee!" and "cripes!" and such like.I'm an Andy Warhol fan.I find the world inspires such expressions. If American males don't use them so much the worse for them. They must be jaded which I ain't.

"Heart to heart"??You must be joking.

I'm never angry.Haven't the time.

I have never met anybody worth listening to who wasn't mean.Sometimes one means well by being mean.I'n not prepared to lead people up the garden path just to be popular. You won't learn one useful thing off people being "nice" to you.I call that real mean.

And no -I don't give much of an on the wing fornication for anything but "it sure does bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets."(That's a bit of Bobby talk).

OK?

Why do you make assumptions?

Are you tawkin' ta me? And is this about you? ...
Otherwise, I suppose make some assumptions based on all the information I may at a given time. Sometimes I'm right. Sometimes I'm wrong. I try not to give voice to my assumptions most of the time and keep an open mind.

Why do you seem so darn cantankerous, Spendi-?
And/or what was the last book you read?

Madame Bovary (4th or 5th time).

How about you?

*Hey Dev-you told me to answer aidan.I'm not cantankerous. If I seem so I seem so to you surely. Not everybody agrees.I'm a bit shocked.

Why do you identify with a Greek slave in Carthage?

I don't identify with Spendius.I recognise in myself certain of the characteristics which Flaubert gave to his No1 hero.I'll admit to identifying with Flaubert to some extent.Besides, the book is pedantically fabulous. We are all slaves now and the Machine is Carthage.

Have you read Salammbo?

I skimmed it when I was doing a French degree, picking out the odd phrase. Haven't got the sticking power these days - maybe never did.

Have you been to Carthage?

I've been in my dreams.I was in the tent when Spendius said to Matho-

Listen! Master....and then shot him that big line of persuasion that ended up with the both of them ending up where they did.I love that "Listen".Flaubert is Spendius and...well it gets a bit tricky after that.Main thing is I can always hear that "Listen" when a con man starts off.But Flaubert gives Spendius the nonce to know that the only way out is to fight and thus he isn't a con man.
He just acts like one.He had been a dealer in women. And well bred as well.

How on earth did you manage to "skim" Salammbo?

It is possible, especially with the internet and short attention spans these days.

Do you attend the theatre? If so, what was the last show or movie you watched and what did you think of it?

No.But I see movies on video now and again but I can't tell you anything about them because if you can't read Salammbo you wouldn't understand.

Which movie do you think you've really "seen"?

Hmmm. I've actually 'studied' Groundhog Day. It's got more layers and themes than more people realize.

My goodness! I really have no problem with reading Salammbo. Why do you find it such an important work?

In 50 words I suppose you require. Can't be done.

It's only one of a number. It's flavour of the month sometimes. It is a great book to break the ice with when one meets someone who also loves it.Which does happen now and again. You can spend hours talking about it without ever once mentioning yourself. It depends on the company one keeps.

Have you read Madame Bovary?

Yes, but it's been a litle while.
p.s. Doesn't have to be 50. Take as many as you like.

Is Salammbo your favorite work or do you have another?

Plenty.Good books improve as you get more experience of life. You get more of the jokes.

Do you actually know a 'clean joke' you could tell?

Sure I do but they have to go right on here and that takes a bit of working out. There are no voice inflections and bodily movements and most jokes depend on that.I try to weave a few into the threads if you can spot them.On these threads they need to be very fast. You couldn't tell the one about the monkey and the Baghdad mosque in print.

Do you only like "clean" jokes?

Not necessarily.

Oh, blast this computer! I'm afraid I must bid adieu, and find a less frustrating past time for now!

Will you please work out a joke? (I could use something to smile at about now?)
