My dad didn't smoke, but we did used to steal Helene Thau's dad smokes and hide them in a hollow tree in the woods behind her house.

Did you ever steal your dad's peppermint schnapps?

What a daft question.I've never heard of peppermint schnapps.

What's the point of hiding the stolen fags?

We had to have them available to us - we couldn't let him smoke them all. But it didn't work, because when it rained they got all wet and soggy.
Peppermint schnapps are awesome - they warm you up all the way down to your toes. And when you're l4 and can't take hard liquor - they taste good too.

What liquor did you steal from your dad's stash?

I used to swig his Tetley's and Chesters, at Christmas time I upgraded to his Bells.

It was a learning process, don't you think?

Sure we do.It didn't me long to learn how dangerous women are despite the fact that I had had a good few years of indoctrination to the contrary.I've learned a lot about America too on these threads and I thought I knew a good bit about it.

Do you find learning difficult?

Sometimes, a bit, but I love learning new things about people places and things all the time. I think it's what keeps up young.Stop learning and then where are you?

You are where you are.Learning useless facts isn't learning proper. All that stuff in the pub quiz is useless.I try to shut my ears when they have it.(Sod it-it's tonight).Just kills conversation. That microphone Jack with what was top of the pops when the sky fell off etc etc.I have the pub quiz taped.I know how it works. It's a trick to try to sell more beer. It's quite subtle though until you give it ten minutes thought. The worst night of the week.

Do you have them where you are?

yeah I find them very irritating. Also addictive if you have a reasonable general knowledge. But I agree you dont really learn anything.

Not a drop just yet, Spend-. but it's before dinner here. You asked if we have pub quizzes? Not really. Pubs here aren't the same as there. We mostly keep to ourselves, our friends, etc. when out. I'm a social creature, so I talk to most anyone, but I'm the exception to the rule.

I think pubs over there are more of a communtity gathering place or at least that's what it seems. Am I wrong?

p.s The question doensn't have to be easy. I'm not a complete idiot! But an interesting one will do nicely.

They are not as good as they used to be but yes they are still "AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY" as the gold letters so distastefully blare over the top of the amber nectar tax point. What I like about them is that there's always the possibility of something good happening. The next new friend might be a friend for life. It's unlikely but it happens. They come and go.I'm hardcore. And you get to know these strange people quite quickly with a pint or two.

If you stick with what you say you won't get that or do you?Isn't it a bit limiting mixing with the same crowd all the time?

I know. I'm just a bit under the weather and my wit has suffered. I tend to hang with a different crowd at different times. I don't know if it's just the pub scene or an American thing, plus I don't go out every night like I used to. Kids tend to cramp your style that way. I meet people out & about, places I go. I'm really very friendly, but I think maybe, we tend to socialize in our own groups in different places - restaurants, other people's houses, coffee shops, bars / pubs ... O.K what AM I trying to
say?... There are pubs with their regulars, but I don't see a town pub scene here.
Do you live in a very big town or a small neighborhood where you can get together every night?

A small town with 16 places within walking distance where I can be convivial with friends any time I choose.

Do you prefer to socialise in 2s and 3s or go to parties?

Depends on the time of day, & situation. Lately I've been lunching with just a few friends, but every once in a while we get together with other couples and families. I don't have as many opportunities to just go to parties, but go when I can just to meet new people.
Do you make many friends on your cross country trips?

I don't really know any more, but as a kid I was an excellent depth /distance diver. Wonder if I could do it again?

Do you enjoy water sports or swimming?
