Where is local for you? You don't have to say if you don't want to. I was just curious.
Yes, I'm afraid we still chew gum, although some much more obnoxiously than others. I dont like to do it talking to people. It's frowned upon for those in public service, waitresses, concierge ... I think it's rude, but it is acceptable practice in the general public, I'm afraid.

Do the British not chew gum? And what's with the jokes about Englishmen having bad teeth. Is that some old joke or just a silly stereotype? I've never been over across the pond. I've only travelled there vicariously!

Oh, and BTW, THIS is the candy corn I was talking about. I only asked because Clary mentioned she'd not heard of it.:

We seem to have ceased asking questions so I will bring discipline and sanity back to this thread.

Don't you think Mathos ought to be writing for a ladies underwear catalouge?

Hey, I asked a question? Didn't you read my post?:

And yes, Mathos would probably do great writing for a women's loungerie catalogue! Or writing some type of erotica.

I did read your post my leetle cheekin. It was lovely.

Some of us do chew gum I'm afraid. Those of a nervous disposition do it in order to try to stop their mouths going dry.

We have bad teeth due to acidity in the water.

Is there anything else you're not clear about?

Not just now, but I'll let you know! You're a wealth of information.

I didn't know that about the water. What else might one want to know in travelling to your fair land that say a 'Yank' wouldn't know?

That we are not as daft or as pliable as you might think we are.

Are you thinking of coming?

Oh, I'd never think that! I'd love to come. Remember, I have a travel bug! Don't know when I could ever afford it, but I sure like thinking about it & learning about places I'd like to go.

I have a cousin in Southampton. Is that far from you?

It depends how you define "far".It's nearer than Alpha Centauri and not as far as my ashtray. They have a crap football team though and a very nice place to tie ships up at.A friend of mine who was in the navy married a lady from Southampton but she reverted to type fairly quickly and ran off with a bloke who had more money. And her sister turned up and became very friendly with one of the richest blokes in England.Thereby hangs a tale. But I'm very discreet.

What line of work is your cousin in?

She's a nurse. I'm not exactly sure what her husband does. I think he's in communications. He's the Englishman. Not sure if he's exactly from there (Southampton). I see her more often than him as she's from Maryland. It's just so strange to hear a southerner say Bristish words like "loo". I don't know why that sticks in my brain!
That DOES sound like quite a tale, but I won't ask.

Have I asked you yet if you'd been to the US? Have you? Where? And what did you think?

You mean about America? That's not even the half of it!

Not me! Actions speak louder than words, if you ask me! Anyone can SAY something. It can be quite another to DO!

Do you find that to be true or more as you said:
"Does everybody believe that words are deeds"?

Auberon Waugh used to say that the louder a dinner guest insisted on their honesty the faster he started counting the spoons. It was one of the seams Monte Python mined.

Have you ever applied that to all the other virtues?

I don't believe I've ever heard that one and I never thought about it, but it is an interesting way to look at things.

Is that what you do?

More or less.I tend to judge people on whether I would choose to go behind enemy lines with them and those who speak virtuously are the very last.
Acting virtuously costs you which is why I admire those people who work in Africa and other God forsaken places. The trouble is that those who spin the fine words get all the sodding publicity.

Do you like sport?

You have an interesting take, Spendi-. Have you ever been wrong about a person or are you usually, how do you say, spot on?

Yes, I like sport. Do you mean to watch or participate? Hubby likes (American) football & I watch with him sometimes. I prefer to go in person to games - football, baseball, hockey. I don't get to participate as much as I used to. I love raquetball and an occasional game of touch football with friends. Mostly I walk though.

How about you, and sports I mean?

No, I can't get interested in it. At this moment McTag is watching football in my living room and I am here in preference.

Do you prefer watching gardening shows, or house styling shows, to sport?

The problem with the gardening and house styling B/S is that if they put the petunias in the wrong dibbed hole or if they drill into the water mains they just shout "CUT" and do it all over again until they get it right.

Now when Frank Lampard caressed the Owen inch perfect cross into the back of the net out of reach of the Polish goalie's despairing fingertips to take England to the top of their group he couldn't have
rewound the video.That was it.

Now Clary-this makes an appreciable difference in the artistic appreciation of the two programmes and if you like Mac the best thing is to join him in the football and learn to like it because it is a trick to bemuse babies is rewinding the video until you get it right.I could score 180 at darts every time and make 147 breaks at snooker if I was allowed to rewind the video. And so could you.

Existentialism you know.Or do you?

That's your beef with those type of shows? Point taken. You seem to have a real passion for sports though.

Existentialism, yes I know it. What is your take on it? Would you call yourself an existential atheist or existential theist?

Neither Dev.I'm just me.

I meant that when Frank Lampard connected his foot on the cross from Owen in front of 70,000 baying fans and millions in front of TVs in pubs and offices and homes including his nearest and dearest and his mates he was in what Mailer called an "existential moment".Something really real.Life.
We see the really real so often in tragedies but to see it in celebration is something actors cannot touch. When it's fast and a big game turns on it there is something special in it which can't be matched. That is why sport attracts me.And if a Polish player had done it it would be just as good.
It is fiendishly difficult to score just one goal against a good team.

Do you think it's all about winning?

No, definitely not - I mean in life. I know in sports it's the goal, but it's more about the journey, the experience, the people. At least that's the way I look at it.
I like that you're just you, without the labels. People get too hung up on them as it is. I don't like using them to describe myself either.
I know what you mean about an existential moment, though. I suppose we have more of them than we know, but there are those great ones when you're aware of it and they become priceless memories.

I'm betting you've had at least a few. Care to describe one?
