One can only answer that in broad brush strokes.

Familiarity with scenery, roads, faces, characters, histories, truth. That sort of thing.Just feeling one belongs.Knowing everybody. One hardly ever thinks about it except when somebody brings it up.Mindless one might say.Respectful of order.A bit reactionary actually.
Not Jacobin.

How's that?

A bit obsolete.

Dont you think living around the world can change your mind about roots?

I know it's obsolete.I recognised that.

There's no way living around the world could change my mind because I know that living around the world doesn't actually mean living around the world. It means living in selected parts of it under carefully controlled conditions.

Diverting the question...

What about living under uncontrolled conditions?

Yeah-well-I've done some of that.

How did I divert the question?I don't understand.

Certainly my long piece has been treated very superficially don't you think?

No, never.

The question is: dont you think that living on other places in the world, under uncontrolled conditions, could change your way of thinking about roots?

Not treated superficially Francis???Come on man.
You got nowhere near it.
Cripes-I treated it superficially myself.

I have been in dangerous uncontrolled conditions for 12 months. All that did was reinforce the viewpoint. And it is only a viewpoint which I did point out.

I am very respectful of uncontrolled conditions just like our governments are.I don't patronise them.I have no problem with how tough I am.I'm a big softie who likes his home comforts and tried and tested routines and there are millions of us and you never hear our voice.Well-hardly ever.

What's your question? Please let Francis answer mine - I need to know. You're of no interest to me - I've already chewed you up and spit you out - you silly little highschooler. I need to move on to my next conquest.

Don't you know that's what I do?

I wasn't trying. You walked in on it mate.I was putting another side to things that were said last night by others. That's all.Surely you are in favour of balanced discussion,if only for young threaders to hear both sides.
I would never have mentioned it.I know that the rootless are committed to their position and will defend it.

Young people read these threads. One sidedness is Imam like.

Don't you agree?

No, I don't think so, although I've never thought about it.

If I say that made me smile will people think I want to **** you?

I don't know who is answering what now.But there has been a drift towards superficiality. Not that I mind in the least. It has the great advantage of effortlessness.

Are you feeling a bit frisky?

Not with fixed positions based on self interest. There are fixed positions based on probabilities and evidence though.

Have you read The Lonely Crowd?

Francis - I know you're right. What people think is no more meaningful or substantial than a sigh. But sometimes you just gotta let them know that, you know.

Spendius, haven't read the Lonely Crowd - should I?
