I wanna know how to make a Pavlova like the kind Russell Crowe ate so he could gain all that weight for the movie where he was all fattened up.

I heard that Pavlovas were originally from OZ

There are a bazillion pavlova recipes.

@Lordyaswas,
5 foot wingspan - now, that's scary.

But being swooped on by suspicious magpies when you're ambling along minding your own business is pretty scary, too.

@Lordyaswas,
I used to walk to work along a country road every morning, about dawn. One morning, an owl swooped over my head. I don't think it was meant as a threat--but if it had been an attack, i'd have been screwed. I didn't hear a sound, and only saw the bird as it passed over my head. It was completely silent. No wonder mice are screwed when the owls are out hunting.

@Setanta,
I had an ordinary Barn Owl land on my arm once at a Country Fair exhibition. I had to wear a big gauntlet but could still feel the strength of that grip on my arm.
The silent flying is achieved by special curly bits of the end of their wing fevvers, I think. It stops the whoosh noise.
A follow up to the Eagle Owl story came on the radio yesterday when it was announced that a local bank was giving an umbrella to each household in the village until the Eagle Owl's hormones have calmed down.

Coincidentally, I'm watching a programme on BBC2 right now;
Super Powered Owls: Natural World.

Here's the silent flight experiment (about 2 mins)

@Setanta,
Is it the going up at the end of each sentence that does it Set?

I spoke to my lad on skype the other day, and noticed a very slight interrogative intonation slipping in here and there.
Damned infectious, these Aussies.

I love the name. Powerful Owl.

I wonder if there is a Weak Owl? Or a Not Very Muscular Owl?

The diffident owls probably died out long since--not feeding often enough.

No, it was his pronunciation that did it for me. I'm no fan of "up-speak," but it doesn't interfere with my comprehension. I've been hearing impaired all my life, badly in one ear and mildly in the other. It gets worse as i age. I suspect that ferinners would have a very difficult time understanding Americans with thick accents from the southeast coast or from Maine.

@Setanta,
I didn't even try to listen to a whole program, with my mix of not being savvy about varied english accents/dialects in the first place and increasing hardness of hearing since the 80's. I would read if there were a transcript, probably.

When Dlowan visited here, I could make out her words most of the time, though I had to attend closely or miss out. Lovely voice, just lovely, says ms. sort of monotonal, except when I'm laughing.

@ossobuco,
You'd like a NZ accent, Osso.

A sort of Australian? Where everything goes up the end? They''re telling you something but you think they're asking?
Mixed with South Effricen, where everyone has a grudge. They keep their car in it.

@Lordyaswas,
I think it's funny that at the start of each ICC world cup game the countdown is via video with each player saying a number from 10 down to 1.

They never have a New Zealander shouting 'SIX'

It sounds like SEX

NZ joke 'What comes after six?'

'Breakfast'
