@roger,
Baked beans, rice Smile In tomato with crispy bread, butter, egg, peperoni, well it would be a tasty sausage. Who the heck can eat all of that? I'd share it though Smile

On another note, cause us Aussies do feed magpies, this is "babies and Mother" noting that "baby (1)" likes to play with things in the yard, including the dogs toys.

Thanks for the heads up, margo.

I shall now be looking out for any Western type behaviour, although I fear it's already started as he has purchased a motorbike.

I suppose bush band music will be next. Gumtree canoe, etc.

Oh the shame.

Checked shirts. Watch out for those! The start of a slippery slope. They'll be flannelette next.

Does he have a pair of dress thongs?

@ehBeth,
Dare I ask how many calories are in the average work of gloriousness, ehbeth?

I had something which sounded like poomuckle once, and technically was not supposed to eat anything else for the next four days.

Sucuklu!!!!!

Haven't had one since I left Canberra. Used to love the ones they made at Turk Oz in Dickson - which I see is no longer trading. Sniff.

@hingehead,
I wanna know how to make a Pavlova like the kind Russell Crowe ate so he could gain all that weight for the movie where he was all fattened up.

I heard that Pavlovas were originally from OZ

Do your magpies ever treat you to this?

When i was a boy, magpies had a reputation for stealing bright, shiny objects, and for bestowing them. This girl in Seattle got her "gifts" from crows whom she had been feeding in the back yard.

@hingehead,
They mention in the novel about how bad an idea it is to come within a certain distance of their nests. Many, many years ago, i was persecuted by a starling who had, apparently decided i was after her nest.

A mockingbird used to harass me every time I went out the back door. One day I wadded up a very large white trash bag in my hand and when it got right up at my face, I shook out the bag and did a throwing motion at the same time. The bag blossomed out so suddenly, the bird got terrified. Never saw it again.

@edgarblythe,
Back in Venice, there was a forever vacant lot half a block down our street and then north a half a block. There were a few trees on it, maybe I'm remembering a big palm. I wasn't around that day but heard about a muster of crows going after a cat and the cat's owner, a young girl, trying to save the cat. More neighbors came out. I don't remember the denouement now, just that it happened.

Some years later, Frank Gehry bought that lot to build himself and family a new house, but it never happened - that I know of. Don't now know what happened to the lot, he kept it quite a while. At the other end of that street, turning the corner to the east, was where the Lennon family lived in a big old house (Lennon Sisters of Lawrence Welk fame). That was actually a "crummy" neighborhood back when we moved there, which is why we could get a small cottage type house cheap.

I kinda like crows.

@ehBeth,
this is for the straight up pide - definitely use Nigella seeds if you can get your hands on them - they make a real difference in the taste

http://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipes/turkish-flat-bread-pide

with sujuk

http://www.turkishcookbook.com/2008/04/sujuk-pide.php

yummly's collection of pide recipes in case you need ideas of combos to use

I like spinach with an egg cracked on before it goes in the oven.
