How The NRA Helped Foment An Armed Insurrection At The Capitol

The NRA deserves blame for this as well as Trump and the corrupt republican party.

I thought this was a really good piece on what the Republicans have wrought through Trump, by Mike Seccombe, an Oz journalist who spent many years reporting in the US.
Full Article

Some juicy quotes:
Quote:
For as things now stand, more than three in 10 Americans, and some three-quarters of Republicans, do not believe Biden legitimately won office, according to a Washington Post–ABC poll, conducted in the week after the mob of thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol.

They believe he was elected through massive voter fraud. They believe this despite the testimony of officials that the election was fairly conducted; despite the 50-plus losses in various courts including the Republican-stacked Supreme Court; despite the evidence Donald Trump himself solicited fraud by pressing state electoral authorities to change the vote tally; despite the electoral college, both houses of congress, the Republican senate leader, Mitch McConnell, and Trump’s vice-president, Mike Pence, all affirming Biden as the winner.

They continue to believe despite all evidence to the contrary, because, says Dr Debra Smith, a principal research fellow specialising in political extremism at Victoria University, for them it is not a matter of evidence, it’s a matter of faith – based, like religion, in “emotional belief”.

“Trying to create a sort of coherent, you know, logical argument back, it doesn’t matter, because it doesn’t resonate,” she says.

Quote:
As the conservative humourist P. J. O’Rourke succinctly put it back in 1991: “Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work, and then they get elected and prove it.”

Quote:
The Trump presidency, wrote Richardson, was “the culmination of two generations of Republican attempts to dismantle the New Deal state”.

Quote:
“Until last week, many party leaders and consultants thought they could preach the Constitution while winking at QAnon. They can’t. The GOP must reject conspiracy theories or be consumed by them. Now is the time to decide what this party is about,” he said.

Trump has zero interest in competence and even less regarding professional ethics or competence. He's a con man who values cheating and getting over on people. He gets pleasure out of defrauding elderly widows, he loves humiliating people in dire circumstances...but the thing that gives him the most bang for his buck was his four year racket illegally withholding funds that never belonged to him and forcing others into compromising and desperate positions. He's the guy who prefers to drop a turd in the punch bowl just to make others uncomfortable. Well, he's just a horrible, twisted, malevolent, asshat.

She is a truly disgusting human being.

I hope she is finally expelled from the Congress...but doubt the Republicans will grow the spine necessary for that warranted move.

@Region Philbis,
GOP Rep. Kinzinger to start new PAC to challenge party’s Trump supporters
Quote:
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), one of 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Donald Trump earlier this month, has launched a new leadership political action committee that is designed to become a financial engine to challenge the former president’s wing of the GOP caucus and stand up against a leadership team still aligned with him.

Kinzinger, a onetime star of the 2010 Tea Party class, said the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol served as a final breaking point for the direction of the Republican Party, providing a stark divide between those who want to continue a path toward autocracy and those who want to return to traditional conservative values.

But any lawyer who would allow Trump to testify anywhere under oath...

@BillW,
If you could prove he was lying - and if you could you wouldn't need to sit him in front of the hearing.
