@Region Philbis,
I'm starting to get achy in the left wrist.
I'll have to tape up before my next shoveling session.
Back and legs are weary but OK.

@George,

i prolly don't have to tell you -- make sure you switch hands, so you're not always throwing with the same arm.

not easy to do when you only have one spot to pile.

yesterday i was walking shovel-fuls, sometimes 20-30 feet, to find a good spot...

@Region Philbis,
have you got a big push shovel and a smaller lifting shovel?

I find it helpful to have someone climb in and use the little (normal size for some households) shovel to lift some snow higher in the middle - so there's space on the edge for new snow

(gotta have strategy when your front lawn is the size of a parking spot for a small car)

@ehBeth,

i use this Bad Boy for most shoveling --
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31kxpcG1TxL.jpg

it weighs ~5 lbs with nothing in it, so i get a gooooood workout.

i'll use a lighter plastic shovel for steps and back porch.

for ice or "cement" snow, i use a dirt shovel to break into small pieces...

@Region Philbis,
That's a good reminder!

I have the same trouble with a shovel that I have with a hockey stick. I'm
only comfortable with my left hand low. I'll have to force myself to switch
my grip every once in a while.

When I need to transport by shovel, I generally set up a runway and slide
the shovel along the snow-covered ground of the runway.

@Region Philbis,
so you're using a pusher for lifting - that's quite a workout

2 shovels - really - I learned it from an occupational therapist (when I asked her why shovels are often sold in sets of two here) - big flattish pusher, smaller deeper lifter - easier on the back and shoulders

Dear Snow,

I could say “it’s not you, it’s me,” but that would be the biggest lie I’ve told since I promised the British they wouldn’t get shot at if they showed up by sea. It is you. It’s 100 percent you.

But it wasn’t always you. Things started off so well between us; you were so novel, so beautiful, so calming and clean when we met. Remember how exciting it was when I shut down for the first time, and we skipped school and work, and frolicked through my streets together? The way you made me feel so pretty, so refreshed, and seasonal?

I’ll never forget those wonderful first days. But that was the early stage of the relationship; now you’re dirty all the time, you never clean up after yourself, and you’ve grown even colder.

At this point, I’m just feeling...well, smothered. You won’t leave me alone. I tell you I need space and you just keep showing up. How do you not see that by always hanging around, you’re making me turn inward? I don’t even leave the house anymore because I know you’ll be waiting outside my door.

Even if you were to back off immediately, we’d still be totally over. I’m literally up to my neck in dealing with the mess you made. Because of you, I may need to borrow equipment from New York City.

Do you know how embarrassing that is? Those guys already think of me as their inadequate little sister, and now I have to go to them with my gold-domed hat in hand and ask for help?

It’s like you’ve turned into this unstoppable monster. I don’t even know you anymore. You’ve also ruined a lot of my stuff; I can’t find like five-thousand of my cars, my bikes are all buried for the foreseeable future, and you’ve killed every single plant I had.

Also, now is probably a good time to tell you I’ve met someone. His name is Spring, and while it’s long distance right now, he’ll be moving in hopefully sometime around March or April.

Maybe next winter we can be friends again. But until then, please lose my address.

Yours unfondly,

Boston

@Lordyaswas,
I recognized a lot of the places in the slideshow. The first one or so in Somerville is where we run 5Ks.

I have been following this. I feel sort of bad that my temps these days have actually approached the 80s this week. But, every region has its pluses as well as drawbacks.

@jespah,
Are they renaming it Winterville anytime soon, jesp?

Here are some winter warmer recipes for you.

That's if you can get to the shops for the ingredients, of course.

@George,
Snow's mostly too high for a snowblower.

tried to drive into work today - 'still was a distance after an hour of driving - subway wasn't an option as they were replacing subway for bus - I heard the line for the bus was a quarter mile long.

So I turned around and got back home in 15 minutes (took an hour longer to get where I was). Not sure when I will ever be the in the office again. I almost got stuck in my driveway -- this after using the snow blower on it yesterday.
