Well, Timber, cheap shots such as the one you provide are not the problem. Actually it's funny. As are the writings of Al Franken and Molly Ivins, for instance. It's the tactics of the fanatical fringe of your party which I call into question. On the left our fanatics are not organized and right now can't agree. But that doesn't make it alright to close your eyes to the destructive nature of the fanatical fringe element in your party that are running things now, including you and all other reasonable members of the Republican party. You have your eyes closed.

That is as you see it, Lola. I dispute the assertion that my eyes are closed to anything, and I perceive that some folks, eyes open or shut, Left and Right alike, are prone to see things that aren't there. Perhaps its really just pot-vs-kettle argument, but I sense the extremists within the Democratic Party are far more an influence on that institution than are the rightwing extremists an influence on the Republican Party. I'm sure both our perceptions are tinged by point of view, and I'm quite pleased we can discuss these differences civilly and adultly. Some folks just don't seem able to get the hang of that.

BillW, explain yourself please? I know it's tedious to explan a good joke. But I'm not getting it.

Timber,

You haven't addressed any of the posts I've provided about the Christian fundamentalist power base in your party. Can you comment on your opinion about the specifics about that? I need to understand what you don't see in the 2002 Texas GOP platform, for instance.

Maybe I can clarify what I'm trying to demonstrate. I beieve, and have good evidence for the fact that there is an attempt to establish a theorcacy here. And the attempt is not only succeeding, it's almost complete.

Timber, will this be ok with you?

Lola, I really see no Religio-fundamentalist co-option whatsoever. I submit I "see" that issue as one that "isn't there". Jerry Falwell and his sort are less a factor within the Republican Party than are Jesse Jackson or the disciples of Malolm X factors within the Democratic Party, IMO. All of them, Bible-thumpers and quasi-religious reverse racists alike, wingnuts of whatever stripe or afilliation, are reprehensible, and embarrassments to the sincere members of the political parties to which they cling in the interest of providing themselves legitimacy they never will possess. I toss Rush Limbaugh in with the bunch.

Lola, for me - you fully explained yourself a very long time ago. I live at the buckle of the bible belt where 70% of the people believe that Bush finally told a lie when he said that Saddam was not at the heart of 9/11, but he did it to get the liberal press off his back!!!!!!!!!

This is a repost, sorry to take up the band width (whatever that is Laughing) but I want to ask Timber, Sofia, fishin and/or george to comment on this specific bit of information and it's too far buried in the back pages of this thread, thus the repetition. The following quotation is from the web site of:

TheocracyWatch
a project of the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy at Cornell University

http://www.4religious-right.info/

Quote:
The term dominion means control over, in this case control over all the democratic institutions in this country. The Republican Party has been the key vehicle in the drive for control. Now that the Religious Right dominates both houses of Congress and the presidency, they are highly focused on the one remaining branch of government: the courts."Judges are the basis of the land's righteousness," said David Barton, a "Christian nation" activist and vice chair of the Texas state GOP. Barton is dedicated to ending the separation of church and state and was speaking about the 2002 elections. "We have a Senate election here in Texas. The only issue that should matter is judges."

David Barton was speaking at Worldview Weekend in April 2002, an event designed to teach fundamentalists how to gain political influence and bring government under religious control. Another speaker at that event was the House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay, but it was Barton's speech that captured the spirit of the 2002 elections: "The only issue that should matter is judges." The following link is an article by Rob Boston of American's United for Separation of Church and State in response to David Barton. Click Here

In his speech Barton was urging the audience to vote for any Republican senator, even moderates. Since Republican leadership is firmly in the hands of the Religious Right, the strategy was to ensure a Republican majority in both houses.

NBC's Meet The Press offers Condy Rice in the same timeslot. Neither Fox nor ABC seem to have anything special goin' on. TechTV is doing a Call for Help rerun, and Speedvision recaps a minor boat race.

Re lola's claim that the party, at the national level, is deeply and significantly influenced by the moral majority crowd.... how do you adjudge this and reach your differing conclusion? It is not as if she doesn't have the research to back this up. Joan Didion's piece "god's country" from the NY Review, for example, is not sloppy journalism. It's only available to paying folks now, but I'm sure she would copy and paste and mail to you...if you were...you know...going to read it.
