If you are relying on hydrostatic shock, yes. But it is also good to be prepared for those cases where the aggressor shrugs off hydrostatic shock and keeps on coming.
Hollowpoints that are somewhat heavy for their given caliber don't have the same potency of hydrostatic shock, but they still produce it, and they also penetrate deeply for those cases where hydrostatic shock doesn't produce the desired effect.
.45ACP 230 grain hollowpoints are the best at reaching this compromise. They provide very good penetration
and very good hydrostatic shock.
If I had to defend myself with a .40 S&W, I'd prefer 165 grain hollowpoints.
