Actually Mexican gangs get few of their long guns from the US. They get their AK-47s from the Venezuelan government. They steal the rest of their heavy weapons from the Mexican military.

About the only thing that US markets supply to Mexican gangs are FN-57 pistols.

@parados,
Doctors kill WAY more people (about 100,000 a year) by medical mistake than police do.

If we count that way, your 100,000 includes all hospital mistakes, then I think we can count police killed more through their mistakes. Gosh, all those traffic accidents are the result of police not stopping the person before they kill someone.

Baltimore man dies, was healthy at arrest, spine 80% severed at neck in custody
Freddie Gray, a Baltimore man injured during an arrest by Baltimore police last week, died Sunday morning at Shock Trauma, according to family members and a hospital spokesperson.
Gray's death comes a week after his arrest and just hours after a protest was held at Baltimore police headquarters.

Snip:
Four bicycle officers tried to stop Gray about 9 a.m. on April 12 in the 1600 block of W. North Ave. for an alleged violation that police have not disclosed. He ran, police said, and the officers caught him and restrained him on the ground while awaiting backup.
According to a police timeline he was fine when he was loaded into a van to be taken to the district station, but was injured by the time he got out. He suffered a broken vertebra and an injured voice box, his family said.

Snip:

Gray was healthy at the time of the arrest, which Murphy said occurred "without any evidence he had committed a crime." Murphy said Gray's spine was "80 percent severed at his neck" when he was in custody. Murphy said Gray "lapsed into a coma, died, was resuscitated, stayed in a coma and on Monday, underwent extensive surgery at Shock Trauma to save his life.

"He clung to life for seven days" before dying Sunday morning, Murphy said.

@Baldimo,
The Bush DoJ certainly messed up with that program, didn't they? Thanks for pointing that out. One more Alberto Gonzales that the Obama White House had to deal with.

@Baldimo,
Care to explain how the President started this program two years before he got elected???????????????????????????????????????

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATF_gunwalking_scandal

"Gunwalking", or "letting guns walk", was a tactic of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which ran a series of sting operations[2][3] between 2006[4] and 2011[2][5] in the Tucson and Phoenix area where the ATF "purposely allowed licensed firearms dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers, hoping to track the guns to Mexican drug cartel leaders and arrest them."[6] These operations were done under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, a project intended to stem the flow of firearms into Mexico by interdicting straw purchasers and gun traffickers within the United States.[7] The Jacob Chambers Case began in October 2009 and eventually became known in February 2010 as "Operation Fast and Furious" after agents discovered Chambers and the other suspects under investigation belonged to a car club.[1]

Cripes. That is hard to even read, much less live in that town and have it happen. She won the vote, so she must have people who respect her.
I wish her success (oh, and safety).

Man filmed being beaten by California deputies settles for $650G
Source: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES – A California county on Tuesday approved paying a $650,000 settlement to avoid a lawsuit by a man whose beating by deputies after a horse chase was captured on video and led to a federal civil rights investigation.

San Bernardino County supervisors approved the settlement with Francis Pusok, 30, in a closed meeting, said David Wert, a county spokesman.

Attorneys Sharon Brunner and Jim Terrell, who represent Pusok, said in a statement that county officials initiated the settlement negotiations. The lawyers noted that it was "remarkable as there was essentially no investigation nor any indictments," and it was based on video.

Pusok's arrest was recorded by a TV news crew in a helicopter and led to the FBI probe and 10 deputies being placed on leave pending an ongoing internal investigation.

More Than 1,000 March In Baltimore To Protest Death Of Man In Police Custody
Source: Associated Press

April 21, 2015 at 11:45 PM, updated April 21, 2015 at 11:58 PM

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Justice Department said Tuesday it has opened a civil rights investigation into the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who suffered a fatal spinal-cord injury under mysterious circumstances after he was handcuffed and put in the back of a police van.

After the probe was announced, at least 1,000 people gathered at a previously planned rally at the site of Gray's arrest. Protesters marched to a police station a couple of blocks away, chanting and holding signs that read "Black Lives Matter" and "No Justice, No Peace" — slogans that have come to embody what demonstrators believe is widespread mistreatment of blacks by police.

Pricilla Jackson carried a sign reading, "Convict Freddie's killers," that listed the names of the six officers suspended with pay while local authorities and the U.S. Justice Department investigate the death. Jackson, who is black, said she wants Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to know that she and others have been brutalized by police.

"They're hurting us when they throw us to the ground and kick us and punch us," said Jackson, 53.

'Disturbing' patterns and practices found in look at 250 police-involved shootings - Palm Beach

Armed with a Cellphone

Exclusively-obtained dash-cam video shows Dontrell Stephens, 20, talking on a cell phone while riding his bike on a Friday morning in September 2013. He can be seen turning onto Norma Elaine Road near Haverhill Road and Okeechobee Boulevard as PBSO deputy Adams Lin trails him.

Moments later, Stephens realizes he’s being followed. He pulls over, gets off his bike with a cell phone in his right hand and walks toward the deputy. For approximately four seconds Stephens is out of frame only to be seen again when being shot four times.

Stephens, who is black and has a criminal record for possessing cocaine, is seen running from the bullets then dropping to the ground.

Stephens was armed with nothing but a cell phone.

WPTV placed this on their Facebook page last night and people were blaming WPTV for releasing this video. They aren't mad at the Police Officer, they were mad at WPTV. I'm disturbed by this report and by the people who take the side of the cop. The sheriff here is on the cop's side everytime. No matter if he hasn't seen the evidence - within 20 minutes of any shooting he is there to say it was not the Deputy's fault.

Arrested for sagging pants, Ervin Edwards tasered to death in custody; police lie in report
Happened in 2013, but video just came out now.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/04/24/1379943/-Arrested-for-sagging-pants-Ervin-Edwards-tasered-to-death-in-custody-Police-lie-in-report

On November 26, 2013, 38-year-old Ervin Edwards, partially deaf and mentally ill, was arrested by police for sagging his pants and taken to the West Baton Rouge Parish jail in Louisiana. He only lived for a few more minutes inside of the cell.

For 18 months, police have lied over and over again about what happened the night Ervin Edwards died in their custody. Now that a video of their despicable actions has been released, it's clear they murdered this man and left him to die all alone in his jail cell. The Advocate has provided an annotated video. See the video and my breakdown of their lies below the fold.

Video of cop macing handcuffed teens in holding cell surfaces, suddenly an investigation begins

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/05/13/1384085/-Video-of-cop-macing-handcuffed-teens-in-holding-cell-surfaces-suddenly-an-investigation-begins?detail=facebook

The video, dated January 26, 2015, shows two teens sitting in a holding area at the Alton Police Department. An officer then walks in, says something, and then pulls out what appears to be a can of pepper spray and sprays both teens. One of the teens then twitches and shakes for several minutes.

The video is short and startling and clearly an abuse of power. There is nothing that can have happened prior to the video, nothing that could have been said during the video that would warrant the unidentified officer's actions. The video was provided to the news by James Gray, President of the Alton NAACP.

Chicago police took 'hunting' photograph with black man as prey

An Illinois judge has released a long-concealed picture that shows two Chicago police officers posing over an unidentified black man in antlers while holding rifles as if he had been hunted.

The photo, which was given to police by federal prosecutors in 2013, was made public for the first time on Wednesday by Cook county Judge Thomas Allen. It was taken sometime between 1998 and 2003 at the Harrison police district station on the west side.

This station is a mile south of Homan Square, the facility where the Guardian earlier this year identified alleged police misconduct and torture as well as other civil rights violations.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy – who last week at a police board meeting deferred any questions about Homan Square brought up by citizens to police legal counsel – called the photo “disgusting”.

“As the superintendent of this department and as a resident of our city, I will not tolerate this kind of behavior, and that is why neither of these officers works for CPD today.”

Jerome Finnigan, on the left, was fired long before the photo was given to the city. He was sentenced to 12 years in a federal prison for income tax evasion and robbery. But the photo is the direct cause of Timothy McDermott’s firing in 2014 by the police board in a 5-to-4 vote.

While board dissenters thought McDermott should be suspended, the majority wrote that “appearing to treat an African-American man not as a human being but as a hunted animal is disgraceful and shocks the conscience”.

McDermott, who asked the judge to keep the photo under seal, is appealing against his dismissal in court, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In April, Chicago became the first city in the nation to pass a reparations ordinance giving

financial restitution, access to city colleges and a memorial, among other things, to victims of police torture under Chicago police commander Jon Burge. The package passed almost a week after it came to light that the city had paid out more than half of a billion dollars for police misconduct in the past decade.

On the day it won unanimously in a city council vote, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said its passage would “bring this dark chapter of Chicago’s history to a close”.

Jury convicts female LA officer of assault in deadly arrest
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurors on Friday convicted a Los Angeles police officer of felony assault for repeatedly kicking a handcuffed woman who later died.

The jury reached its verdict after two days of deliberations in the trial of Officer Mary O'Callaghan, 50. She pleaded not guilty to assault under color of authority in the 2012 arrest of Alesia Thomas, 35.

Officers went to arrest Thomas at her home after she left her two children outside a police station.

A dashboard camera in a police cruiser captured O'Callaghan kicking the handcuffed Thomas in the backseat seven times in the groin, abdomen and upper thigh, prosecutors said. Thomas lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
