@Germlat,
There are real differences in rescue groups. I'd suggest looking for ones that focus on positive reinforcement for training - overall, I find them the most supportive and the best at matching families and dogs.

@ehBeth,
I believe in the concept of positive reinforcement. I wonder if any would admit to the contrary. I mentioned my story about almost giving up on Sam due to containment issues. I liked the fact the guy on the other line was able to understand that I wasn't ready. I'm already thinking about adopting. There will never be another Sam though.

@Germlat,
No, there will never be another Sam.

Every dog we love is so different.

@ehBeth,
Thanks for sharing!! The face on the last one made me giggle a little. The first time I saw Sam, it was his face...he made me giggle. My heart is now open to more.

@Germlat,
I think you 'get' Bella Smile

she can definitely inspire the giggles

she has the personality of a big dog contained in a tiny tiny package

@ehBeth,
True story: growing up we had a German Shepherd and a toy Poodle (this was before the Afghan Hound). The toy poodle was the Alpha. Smile

@Germlat,
exactly! look up and Bella's tiny face and imagine it defending a 130 pound black German Shepherd from anyone (dog or human) from approaching Smile

@ehBeth,
It's funny..about these little ones. It's as if they have no doubt they'll win that fight. Even funnier how the larger ones react. Laughing

We put our beloved Sam down yesterday . My husband took the day off. Sam had initially improved after a heavy course of steroids. His appetite improved and we never fed him dog food again. I'm glad we had that time with him. We pampered him heavily for the last few weeks. It was nice to have the time to say goodbye in a loving way. I just woke up (it's 3:00 a.m. here) from the loveliest dream....I was cuddling my Sam.

@Germlat,
You see it coming and it's still a shock isn't it? Glad the steroids gave him a little quality time with the family.

@Germlat,
I'm so sorry for your loss, Germlat. These things are never easy, no matter how prepared you are.

I'm sure Sam appreciated all the pampering you gave him, and the love that went along with it, and I'm glad the steroids may have given you a little extra time to spend with him.

@Germlat,
I didn't know that, about boxers being the clowns of dogdom. What a wonderful trait.
