Four-year-old Harmony Halyer is fighting for her life after being brutally attacked by two pit-bulls and her mother, Quadirah Banks, says she feels like the world needs to know that these dogs are dangerous.

Banks said that the dogs lived at the home where her children are babysat and that they belonged to her aunt. There had never been a problem in the past with the dogs and they have both been around children before, but on this day the babysitter ignored the aunt’s specific instructions to keep the dogs outside away from the children. When the babysitter opened the door, the dogs immediately and viciously went after four-year-old Halyer while her brother Qua’Mir stood there helpless.

“And then they jumped on her and they started biting her and she was screaming for a little bit, but then she stopped and then they dragged her from the backdoor to the living room and there was blood all over,” Qua’Mir recalled.

Police arrived on the scene quickly and shot and killed the two dogs, but Halyer is just the latest attack victim that has her mother and many across the country arguing that pit-bulls are just too unpredictable to be pets.

Banks said that she believes even in the best of circumstances, pit-bulls can attack without provocation and she doesn't want any more children to face what her daughter is dealing with.

“There was a big hole in her right cheek from one of the dogs and the other dog got her neck, and it don’t matter how long you known them, whether you’re comfortable with them or they’re family dogs, they can just snap at any time. Their mind does not think like humans,” she said

Fatal dog attacks in the United States are a small percentage of the relatively common occurrences of dog bites. While at least 4.5 – 4.7 million Americans (2%) are bitten by dogs every year, only about 0.0002% of these (less than 0.00001% of the U.S. population) result in death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which published a special report on the subject in 2000.[1]

Studies Have Shown That Unsupervised Children are at Risk for Dog Bites

A new study shows that unsupervised children are most at risk for bites, and that the culprits are usually family pets. The study, by Vikram Durairaj, MD, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, also found that if a dog bites once, it is likely to bite again, with the second attack often more brutal than the first.


The study looked at 537 children treated for facial dog bites at The Children’s Hospital on the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus between 2003 and 2008. Durairaj found that 68 percent of bites occurred in children 5 years old or younger with the highest incidence in 3-year-olds. In most cases, the child knew the dog through the family, a friend, or a neighbor. And more than half the time, the dog was provoked when petted too aggressively, startled, or stepped on by the child.
