I like my sweets, and cakes, I have to keep an eye on it. I've given up chocolate for Lent, not for any religious reasons, I'm not remotely religious, but more as an exercise of will power and to appreciate Easter eggs a lot more.
You're sounding oxymoronic, in my opinion - giving up anything for Lent, yet not being "remotely religious" might just then be double talk at best.
You might not be religious; however, I would guess that you might be fairly alienated from Protestants, and their orientation, relating to wealth being a divine sign of salvation. My point being that many non-practicing Catholics are still Catholic from the standpoint of who they feel most comfortable with. Plus, babies still get Baptized.
Catholics, having once ruled Europe, might be in the same emotional predicament as Muslims, since a thousand years ago, Muslim North Africa was the business center of the world, and now they might be wondering when did they get lapped by Christian Europe? The analogy being the question might be, when did Protestant Europe/America/Commonwealth countries lap Catholic Europe?
