His first elected position was President of the P.T.A. at Loch Raven Elementary School, in Baltimore County.

From there he went to Baltimore County Council, and then to Baltimore County Executive, and then to Governor of Maryland, then Vice President. Friends and family called him Teddy, or Ted, Nixon called him Teddy.

Safire was Nixon's speechwriter and I believe the nattering nabobs thing was something he wrote for Agnew.
