Possible definitions for SPANGHEW:

1. To hew branches off trees to be used for lumber.

2. A poem with the ABBA rhyming scheme.

3. The noise made when a spittoon is used.

4. An amalgam of Scots and slang French jerks to do with the auld alliance.

5. A sadistic game perpetrated by human jerks on lesser animals.

6. A structural support which is welded under the cross pieces in the frame of a bridge.

7. To break your nephew out of jail (I spranghew from jail this morning).

8. To cut into bite-sized pieces.

9. A rather naughty, but fun, way of mating, a little like the Venus Butterfly.

10. A moss usually found draping from forest hardwood trees, often illegally harvested and sold to florists.

11. A long slender flexible rod having a tuft or sponge at the end, used to remove foreign bodies from, or apply medication to the larynx or esophagus.

12. To cause a frog or toad to jump in the air.

I vote for Number 7, My Uncle from West VA has used spranghew for over 40 years at least that I know of, he spranghew, Herman just last month, they Sheriff is still looking for him.
