thanks so much for the great pictures of the WAVERLEY ! that truly is a paddle-steamer ( rad-dampfer ) - it looks similar to ones that plied the elbe river before WW II .
there are still a few smaller steam rad-dampfer left on the elbe river - i believe their port of origin is dresden , and there might still be a rad-dampfer left on the rhine .
i understand you , walter , c.i. and your ladies had a good time in hamburg .
sorry i couldn't be there to give you a guided tour .
the harbour in particular has changed so much that i probably would not find my way around any more - even though lived and worked in the harbour for many years - on the left side of the river elbe .
i'm sending you a link to a short film clip from a harbour tour in 1938 . hope you enjoy it . the short colour-film was actually made by a BAKER ! - and not by a professional photographer .
