I believe there has to be a warning here. 'Bockwursten and Biergarten can harm you as well as others'.

Wir bringen jeden hier Deutsch bei, trotz der Rechtschreibdebatte.
Kurios jedoch. Urs53 hat einen schwedischen Mann, bigdice ist ursprünglich ein Schwede. Bestehen da etwa Verbindungen? :-)

rick : we'll be sailing on a dutch ship, the m.s. statendam (holland-america line) from san diego on a 15-day roundtrip to hawaii in december. while holland-america line has been taken over by carnival line they have (so far) maintained their dutch identity; dutch officers, mainly indonesian crew, and dutch and indonesian food specialties. you'll find 'matjes' herring, pasteitje, hotspot met klapstuk on the dinner menu, and for dessert such things as coupe boeren jongens and bitterkoekjes pudding. can't wait to sail(and feast !). hbg

Indonesian crew? Sounds a bit Imperialistic to me. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the Dutch dishes, do realize boerenjongens contains alcohol ( Mr. Green ), before people start talking about some drunken Canadian terrorizing the passengers on the MS Statendam.

Oh ja! Das will ich wohl meinen! BigDice ist ein nach Süddeutschland verpflanzter Schwede, der eine Schwäbin geheiratet hat - mich! Laughing

That's a usage of "lauten" that I've never seen before. I would have thought you'd say "wie heißt das andere." Is this an Austrian usage, like saying "wiederschauen" instead of "wiedersehen?"

The Viennese dialect of German is one of the strangest German dialects I've ever seen (that and the dialect I encountered in Luzern, Switzerland). My uncle tends to speak the Viennese dialect very fast, and sorry, but I just can't follow it.

No, it is not. btw, I speak and write no austrian or viennese dialect.

"lauten" is also a other meaning of "heißen".

deutsh anyone?
I am am going to attempt a more serious try, this time, at Beginning German in September. I have read about "new German spellings" from time to time over the past year or so. Is this something I should concern myself with as a beginner or should I simply chalk it up to the fancy of a small group of elitists that are not satisfied in leaving well enough alone?
