Those of you in the Boston area are probably familiar with Jack Williams' regular feature, Wednesday's Child. Williams has been televising profiles of older children who are looking to be adopted. He takes the kid to a place that the kid would enjoy, according to the individual's biography. While the child enjoys a museum or a baseball field or bowling, Williams tells you a bit about the child and the child tells the camera what sort of situation s/he would like. Some of these kids just break your heart.

Surprisingly, the adoption rate for these kids is low -- I can not remember the exact number, but I would think with the televised profile, that it would be at least 80%.

No, while some gay people resort to artificial insemination or have women bear children for them, they also adopt kids. Not all of the kids gay people adopt are babies. Frankly, these gay people do society and the kids a service.

small digression - one of big problems in Croatia is extremely long, tough and annying process of adopting - what's the situation in USA?

Same thing, and I don't understand why! And why in the world is it so expensive?
many people who would like to adopt "can't afford" a baby. I think it's an outrage.

here is not that expensive actually, but there are million of papers to fill, there are million rules (such as if biological parent visits his/her child once in six months child can't be adopted without biological parent's permission, or fact that family's wealth should be such that it's bigger then one in average croatian family, then age limits /like - 40 year olds cannot adopt baby - actually I think that 30 is biggest difference allowed/ and also you will have to go to eleven thousand interviews if you want to adopt child although you can have your own, I don't know, they probably think that if we decide to have another kid we will throw away adopted one???)

It goes bit faster and easier only if that's child without living biological parents. Although you still have to live better then average Croatian and to be inside age limit.

the late great comedian bill hicks had this to say about gays in the military

anybody stupid enough to want to join the army should be allowed

i have the same thoughts on gay marriage

go for it if it's what you want

or better yet just outlaw all marriage

This is all a bunch of religious and right wing crap! Marriage is not religious unless you want it to be.

Ditto.

I sincerely believe that gay people should have the right to be as miserable as us hetero married folks. But seriously, to me, this is (or should be) a complete non-issue.

For all the praise marriage has been receiving lately, we must remember one of the real reasons marriage was originally instituted: The mother of a child was always obvious. However, the father may have remained an unknown quantity. Men feared feminine sexuality and did not trust women so marriage was instituted so that men could claim their offspring.

It all started with agriculture, and the development of property as a political concept. To ensure that property would be passed on to a man's sons, they instituted the idea of monogamy in an attempt to ensure that the mother was indeed the mother.

I would think that religious groups would *encourage* homosexual marriage. No matter what you believe the morality of homosexual activity to be, the simple fact is: it's going to happen. Given that, why would they not promote strong, stable unions over promiscuity? After all, that is their stance on heterosexual activity, isn't it?

Religious groups, as a whole have programmed minds and a simplistic monolithic view of the world. It's impossible for them to think 'outside the box'.
