Looks to me like she's saying here that Santa was a historical figure, not that he was white.

What good reasons might she have had for adding that bit about Santa?

Well, I can think of two reasons for it: (1) she might be making a joke here, speaking "to the kids" as it were, who haven't been let in on the secret yet that the magical elf lord who brings the world presents every year is a hoax; (2) she might be alluding to the fact that the Santa legend is based on actual historical figures. (BTW, the historical figures Santa was based on probably were white.)

Yes Santa is based on St. Nicholas who I believe was caucasian. Still, nice of her to make that statement when thousands of children of other races may have been within earshot of the tv. Kind. Keeping it classy.
