Indeed.
Additionally, both made businesses with the Nazis - but didn't earn that much (the provisions weren't very high) though in "reputation".
They rarely can be considered to be Nazis - not only due to their Jewish family background but also due to their preferences in and likes for "entartete Kunst" (degenerate art).

@Walter Hinteler,
A couple of (German) museums hope as well to get their 'lost' paintings back: the art museum in Ulm, for instance, hopes that at least some of the in 1938 taken away paintings are among those 1,400 in the 'Gurlitt-collection'.

But as written earlier: if Gurlitt bought them legally, it will be difficult to "just" get them back from his son's heritage.

Today the 75th anniversary of the pogrom night.

The law which enabled Gurlitt to get all that art, was the "Gesetz über Einziehung von Erzeugnissen entarteter Kunst" (law about the confiscation of products of degenerated art)

Some useful information/links can be found here

Reporters of the French magazine Paris Match have seen Cornelius Gurlitt on Friday afternoon in a shopping centre in Munich.
He obviously still lives in the flat, where the art has been - his name is still there, but he doesn't answer the bell.

In a letter to the (print edition of) Der Spiegel, he asked, not to publish/print the name Gurlitt anymore: it seems, he doesn't want to get his father, the art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt, being connected with Nazis.

I can't believe you're asking for a translation as though it were a simple thing. I'll translate if for you, but don't expect it in the next five minutes.

@Setanta,
Just the basic thought will do. The German letter basically was asking the news paper to stop using references to the writer. It was quite respectable .

@farmerman,
Goggle translate gives us this. It's not perfect, but it should do.

NAZI TREASURE: PARIS MATCH HAS FOUND CONRELIUS GURLITT

Exclusive: 79 year old man who is holding 1406 masterpieces of PIcasso, Matisse our Otto Dix is still in Munich

The media of the entire world have been asking themselves if Cornelius Gurlitt was still alive. Since the police search in March, 2012, which lead to the discovery, in his apartment, of the most important contemporary art treasures--1406 paintings by grand masters like Picasso, Chagall, Paul Klee or Max Beckmann--the man seemed to have evaporated (disappeard). This week, the prosecutor at Augsburg, in charge of the business, admitted that he himself didn't know where he (Gurlitt) was. In fact, this 79 year old gentleman with the elegant manner hasn't changed any of his habits.cointinuing to move about in his Schwabing neighborhood. We found him in the commercial center (district) where he was running errands yesterday afternoon. We naturally approached him, but Cornelius Gurlitt flatly turned us down, (saying) rather enigmatically: "Praise which comes from a bad source is the worst of things which can happen"--he said it in a slightly trembling voice, his blue, piercing look filled with anger and fear.

HIS FATHER WAS CLEARED BY THE AMERICANS

Since the revelations by the German weekly Focus on this incredible story, the reactions have multiplied on the origins of this collection a part of which came from confiscations and the looting of Jewish families, before and during the war. By this response, Cornelius Gurlitt perhaps wished to indicate that he has done no wrong in preserving this treasure, which was ammassed by his father, Hildebrand Gurlitt. At first proscribed by the Nazi regime because of his Jewish ancestry, this important art dealer was later to become one of four intermediaries for Joesph Goebbels in the art market, finding and buying hundreds of paintings on behalf of Goebbels. At the end of the war, Hildebrand Gurlitt was cleared by the Americans. He had both run an art gallery in Dusseldorf and organized touring art shows in the United States in the 1950s with several of the art works found last year.

According to scraps of information which we have about Cornelius Gurlitt, it seems that since the death of his mother in 1967, this man has always lived alone with his masterpieces, never having allowed anyone to come into his apartment. As Markus Krishner, the journalist from Focus who is the source of this story has told us: "Cornelius has always refused to answer questions by the police. He doesn't have legal counsel, although a competent lawyer could prevent the seizure of his property in two weeks. His life today is devastated."

In the simplest terms, and leaving out what has already been reported, it appears that Cornelius Gurlitt has been living his life just as he did before the discovery, except that he now suffers the anguish of an unwanted attention.

There are reports in some media that more looted art was found.

This actually happened yesterday - the connection (if there's one) to the other findings is still being investigated.

@Walter Hinteler,
Germany, under pressure, speeds investigation of Nazi-looted art
Quote:
BERLIN, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Germany, under pressure to hasten inquiries into Nazi-looted art works stashed in a recluse's flat, has sent legal experts to help local authorities in Munich resolve myriad ownership issues, Focus magazine reported on Sunday.

The federal government's intervention follows criticism that authorities stayed silent too long about 1,406 art works by European masters they stumbled upon last year.

Focus, based in Munich, said the government sent "several staffers" to the Bavaria justice ministry on Friday.

"The federal government is working hard to ensure that information about the confiscated works of art is made available as there are now indications that Nazi persecution could be involved," Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said the same day.

Focus, which broke the Nazi art story a week ago, also said on Sunday customs experts believe some of the art cannot be legally returned to its original owners because it came from state museums - and restitution claims would likely fail.

@Walter Hinteler,
Not only are there some "degenerate" art works in the new trove, but also some artists names apper who could be classed as anti Nazi "Constructiviats", like Kollwitz
