Interestingly, even being the ultimate conservative leader, she was very supportive of Britain's universal health-care system.

She felt that this was the one area that required government control.

@oralloy,
RIP, Iron Lady.

She has been much maligned by my fellow liberals. I might disagree with much of her political stance, but it's hard to deny that she was very, very good for the UK in the long run. She left a much leaner British government and much wealthier Britain when she was forced out of office.

Side-note on what people here in Hawaii consider important news: in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald this morning, Annette Funicello's obit is prominently featured on the front page; Baroness Thatcher's obit is on Page 5 with not even a 'teaser' note on page 1.

There was wall graffiti in Northern UK that said:

"Iron Lady?

Rust in Peace"

The view that she was good for the UK in the long run is in the eye of the beholder. A strong case can be made that she was a negative force. See:

Interestingly, when she finally left office, her party won zero seats in parliament.

She transformed the UK from a place with regular rolling blackouts, where most people didn't even dream of being able to own their own home, into the modern and successful economy and top world financial center that it is today.

@oralloy,
Yes, and most Europeans today tend to credit her more than Ronald Reagan for the demise of the USSR.

Here is Thatcher on Thatcher; her first post-office sitdown.
