CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — Shooting himself in the leg is not the way Connersville Police Chief David Counceller planned to promote his candidacy for Fayette County sheriff.

Counceller's 40-caliber Glock handgun accidentally discharged Saturday afternoon while he was at Wullf's Gun Shop. Counceller, who was off-duty at the time, said he'd been examining a handgun similar to the one he carries.

"I need to pay more attention," Counceller said. "I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part."

The accident occurred when Counceller was putting his Glock into its holster after he removed it to compare it to a newer Glock model at the gun shop, Counceller said.

Orlando police said officers responded to a call of a shooting at the ramp at I-4 and Princeton Street around 11:30 a.m. Video showed crime scene tape roping off a white car on the roadway.

According to the driver, he was traveling on I-4 when another driver showed a gun in what he told police was a road rage incident.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old Richard Coles, then said during the altercation he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Hewas taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities in Washington State say they have arrested a murder suspect who accidentally shot himself when he mistakenly thought he was getting pulled over by police.

Brandon Mellon, 26, of Spokane, is in critical condition at a Portland, Ore., hospital, where he is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg, police said.

According to KXLY News, Mellon was driving in Pasco, Wash., late Friday night when he thought he was being pulled over by police. He allegedly reached into his pants for his handgun and accidentally shot himself in the leg.

SAN DIEGO - Navy officials have confirmed that a Navy SEAL who accidentally shot himself in the head has died.

Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Frank Magallon tells the U-T San Diego that Petty Officer 3rd Class Gene "Geno" Clayton, Jr. was taken off life support on Saturday. He is survived by his parents and three sisters.

San Diego police were called on Thursday after the accident. Police say Clayton had gone to a bar and brought a woman back to his apartment and was showing her guns when he put a pistol to his head, believing it was unloaded, and pulled the trigger.

OKLAHOMA CITY – A family is now without their grandfather after he accidentally shot himself while trying to protect his grandchildren.

Officials said the man was putting his shotgun in his car when it accidentally fired killing him.

A neighbor who heard the gunshot called 911 and tried to give CPR but was unable to revive the man.

“We’re neighbors. We just wave hi to each other. He was a good neighbor,” TL Hosur said.

Police say the man’s wife and two grandchildren were home at the time.

The grandfather was actually taking the shotgun to his car to keep it out of the reach of his grandchildren.

EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. -- An East Palo Alto man apparently shot himself in the head while intoxicated on New Year's Eve, a police sergeant said.

East Palo Alto police responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Bay Road at 9:07 p.m., Sgt. Jeff Liu said.

Officers found the 26-year-old man with a severe gunshot wound to his head and rendered immediate aid, Liu said.

He was then transported for additional treatment, he said.

Investigators learned man had consumed alcohol while handling the loaded firearm, Liu said.
