So, what's on the menu for today?

It's a little warm and humid in Greenwich Village today, and I don't think Wassau has turned on the a/c yet.

So, I think I'll have my coffee iced, with some chipotle shrimp salad for lunch.

I think it's getting to be shorts and sandals weather.

Will Wassau let us dress like that in here? Is there a dress code?

An asteroid is flying by earth about 20 minutes from now.

"One of the Big Ones": Asteroid on Course for Earth Fly-By

Radar images are giving scientists a look at the asteroid, which has its own moon and will be at its closest point to Earth Friday.
By Jonathan Lloyd
Friday, May 31, 2013

Scientists and amateur astronomers are tracking a 1.7-mile-wide asteroid on course to sail past Earth as it makes a wide U-turn on the way back toward the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

At its closest point to the Earth, asteroid 1998 QE2 will be about 3.6 million miles away -- about 15 times the distance between the Earth and moon. But that comfortable distance -- expected to be reached Friday at 1:59 p.m. PT -- is close enough for astronomers to get a good look at the space rock.

"This is one of the big ones," said Paul Chodas, of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. "It's certainly one to keep an eye on."

I think I'll stay inside here, have a glass of white wine, and ponder my insignificance in the universe.

@firefly,
Good thinking, ff. Anything big enough to have its own satellite orbiting it, ain't nothin' to git too close to.

@firefly,
How can it "sail" past the earth with no winds.

It's an interesting idea that it has its own moon.

He's mad.

I wouldn't ponder your insignificance for too long ff. It's far too much out of character.

@ehBeth,
It's mostly over and I'm still here. It was a weird storm - I decided to try to out run it when the tornados turned south and got stuck in traffic a mile+ long on a relatively minor country road. That sucks, so I turned around and came home. Fortunately, the tornado was about 6 miles to the west of me.

Thanks for your concern!

@BillW,
I don't know how you cope with these storms! Strewth, I'm scared stiff every time there is a bit of thunder and lightning here - terrified of it! Just watching the tornadoes on television was frightening enough!

@vonny,
I read something on facebook today that made me sad.

A woman took a picture of her daughter laying in a bath, with her little dog, covered with blankets. She lives in Oklahoma. She wanted people to know, that she as a child did this, and now she has protected her daughter, that she was tired of the nasty comments that it's the people's fault if something happens as they shouldn't live in Oklahoma, they know it is subject to Tornados.

That's like saying we shouldn't live in the hills, as we know that there will be bushfires ....

I think it's frightening that just when people get themselves together, after the horrific hurricane of late, another starts...

My "adopted" daughter lives there too... It's frightening to not be able to communicate via phone and have to wait to know she's ok...

@FOUND SOUL,
We have lots of big bush fires too, made worse by our high dry temps and to add, a dose of extreme difficult, high winds.

Tornados throughout my lifetime have been a sport. When younger, I was a storm chaser. But most storms were F1 an F2 with a few F3. Now we have been getting many more high F4 and F5 - killer Super Cells. Can't just get in bath tub with heavy covering. Must now be below the ground.

I don't have a shelter and it cost $4-5,000. I have a lot of $5-10,000 things I need that I will use a lot. Such as a boat. I may never need a shelter again in my lifetime. And truthfully, I never have needed one. How do you choose.

These Super Cells are beautiful - and to watch them, you are in an absolutely safe position - without "storm chasing". Just being close is enough. You actually have totally clear, blue skies above. Just be SSE and in front of the Super Cell, about 2-3 miles away.

@BillW,
Glad to hear that you're ok, BillW. I'll be happy when tornado season is over. Then it's on to hurricanes..........no fun either.

I'll have a nice glass of white wine, Wassau. I'm going to sit here on the sofa with my feet up on the ottoman and visit with my friends. I've been so busy. My youngest daughter is getting married and it was help-her-shop-for-a-dress-on-a- budget-day. I did the zipping and hanging, middle and oldest daughter did the photo taking, grand daughter did the baby sitting with middle daughter's 1 year old charming old man. Fun, but now I'm pooped. Tomorrow, we're at it again. It's easy to find a dress if you have all the money in the world........but who wants to waste thousands of dollars on a dress you wear once?.......a lot of people apparenntly.
