@ehBeth,
Good gosh, I was only gone for, like, three days. But thankee for the welcome back, Beth.

Spendi: no, I meant 'joy' at not having the damn phone on. Only reason I have a mobile is because it's the only kind of phone I use now. No land-line. The mobile is more versatile.

@Lola,

If my nestrils to not mistake, it myst be near breakfast tim. I've woken up, can coffee be far away?
But I've now lost, as evidenced on this morning's weigh-in, 13 pounds on my new diet and so I'll just have the coffee black, with dry toast lightly browned please.

@ehBeth,
I've not known it to be used for any other bird. There is a Wikipedia page but it's not that detailed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_for_Sorrow_(nursery_rhyme)

When I lived in the country I knew people who would always say hello to magpies, just in case it's the devil.

It was a popular TV series in the 70s.

There is a saying to distinguish crows from rooks, crows being more solitary.

If you see a lot of crows, they're rooks. If you see a rook on its own, it's a crow.

If you're in doubt, just take a croser rook.

@McTag,
Speaking of corvids, when I came down to England I saw for the first time, a jay. A very handsome bird.
We never saw those where I was brought up.
And I immediately recognised it for what it was, only because it was so like the blue jay on my Toronto Bluejays baseball cap.

@McTag,
Two magpies have turned up this morning. One perched atop my statue of a nude lady hiding her face with her arms and with the obligatory one bent knee.
