@edgarblythe,
I know ed. It takes a gentleman to defend our lifestyle from the hydra-headed monster creeping up on it. Goodie-goodies are all sold out to it.

We could be in clover by now if we weren't such bastards.

@edgarblythe,
Do you remember those magpies I mentioned that had built a nest in one of my trees. They suddenly vanished about 3 days ago.

Yesterday, when I was getting my annual cow-muck ration, free cow muck is strictly rationed, the farmer, who lives about half a mile away, told me he had caught two magpies in his trap and necked them both. He got a pecking for his trouble.

I said he was cruel but he said that they raid the nests of other birds and eat the fledglings and that if they weren't kept in check they would take over ornithology. I shut up. Some of his peers think nothing of shooting a hundred pigeons a day.

A number of other birds have returned to my garden since the magpies vanished.

Wassau, would you make me a quesadilla with provolone and some green olives and bits of pickled jalapenos? That should wake me up. But first I'll have some dark roast coffee, please.

I've never decided if it is wiser to be sleepy or wide awake when reading the early morning news.

@spendius,
I didn't realize that there were magpies in the U.K. Did they migrate to North America or the other way round? I think they're fairly common in the Prairies/Mid-West.

There are some good cowboy songs about magpies.

@ehBeth,
I never knew there were so many different types of magpies with such variations in coloring and appearance. Just look at these three.

I also found this bit of trivia interesting.

Magpies are intelligent birds of the corvidae family, including the black and white Eurasian Magpie, which is one of the few animal species known to be able to recognize itself in a mirror test.

There is a wholesale bakery in Brooklyn which makes "pop art" jam tarts called magpies that are sold in specialty shops and cafes in the City.

Perhaps Wassau could go over there and pick some up for us to try with our tea or coffee.

@izzythepush,
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.

Or

One for sorrow
Two for mirth
Three for a funeral
Four for a birth
Five for heaven
Six for hell
Seven's the Devil his own self

@ehBeth,
Those I mentioned were like the black and white one in ff's post.

I saw another one earlier but it was a fair way off.

Of a sudden my garden is empty of birds. It's a couple of hours since I last saw one and they have been hopping about all day long up to then. Maybe a change in the weather is coming.

@vonny,
Thank you for missing me, vonny. I went to spend the weekend on the other side of the island and didn't even take my laptop with me. Haven't been on line since Friday. I also forgot to take the mobile phone charger with me; battery went dead Sunday morning and I hadn't talked to anyone on the phone until today. Joy!!!

@Lustig Andrei,
I can see why you say Joy!!! Sometimes it is good to get away from it all. Lucky you!

@vonny,
Why not do it all the time then?

I have no mobile phone. Never have had.

I thought Andrei was experiencing "joy", how I can't imagine, by getting reconnected.

He's calling himself a fool otherwise.
