@ehBeth,

It is a good discussion, Beth. I agree. But I think it would be even better if name calling were not so prevalent. But mine is just one opinion among those of the other patrons. Wassau is an old hippie and he believes in freedom of speech, so long as it's not carried to a ridiculous extreme. And he makes exceptions for talent.
The little boxes can be thought of as little minds, designed and built for conformity. And in that sense, I agree that the song makes it's point. However, I have a reaction to it's tone that seems to be to be one of self importance and intolerance. All people are not the same, but many enjoy keeping things simple and uncomplicated. I don't care for any form of religion for myself, however I think many people would have a hard time getting by without it. The real question is freedom of will and expression. I always ask the question, is someone being hurt? A person can be comfortable and appreciate conformity while still being kind and helpful to others. I think the song over simplifies a complex subject.
As far as Pete Seeger is concerned. I have always liked him and his music. But I also love Bob Dylan's music. Bob Dylan himself has not always been a very pleasant of kind person, but I don't confuse that with his artistic expressions. And I do think that Seeger's reaction to Dylan's electric music was out of line and extreme. But there does seem to be a confusion of facts about what Seeger actually did and why. And about that, I haven't a clue.
