@farmerman,
I am defending Lola's artistic taste and political judgment. This is not an argument between generations like the one over Elvis. This was, and is, an argument between two opposed groups in the same generation. They took sides in every Dylan concert at the time and not just in the USA.

The Seeger bunch got flattened out like a jelly in a tight-nipping roller mill. They're into saving the earth now. The last refuge of those with nothing to say and no style. I know which side evolution is on.

You drop it. ff asks for no quarter so I don't think she appreciates you asking on her behalf. I'm neither cornered nor am I squirming. They are just silly assertions to prop the rest of your nonsense up with.

@farmerman,
Explain how I "missed the point" will you please? Just saying that I missed the point is foam from the mouth.

your trying the spendi squirm. Best thing is to drop it, get a beer and move on

The "spendi squirm" is a most apt description of the contortions he's going through to avoid being cornered, even when no exit is possible.

He's even trying to hide behind Lola's skirts, by allegedly purporting to defend her "artistic taste and political judgment"--he's frantically looking for some sort of cover. It's really embarrassing to witness.

Poor guy can't drop it and move on. Seeger can sing Dylan, but spendi can't move on...

Wassau, please, bring the curmudgeon in the corner a large beer and put it on my tab.

@tsarstepan,
I could do some damage to a grilled chicken caesar with a side of butternut squash ravioli right about now.

Maybe a half of Rickard's Red while Sybil gets my order ready and some spiced hazelnuts.

I'm on the fringe of the generation enjoying their fine Seeger/Dylan debate. Entertaining discussion and it does make me feel very young Very Happy

At least Spendi has the cojones to hang in there, FF. The same cannot be said about you or Farmer, or Lolaessence.

I'm not taking sides here. In fact I think you all have interesting, valid points that sometimes lack a balance. But spendi, your response above is very well done, in timing, content and construction. I laughed out loud. Always a good feeling. You do that so well, why must you resort to name calling and other mechanisms that detract from your skill? And don't say that everybody is doing it. Because, that's not a good excuse.

It is a good discussion, Beth. I agree. But I think it would be even better if name calling were not so prevalent. But mine is just one opinion among those of the other patrons. Wassau is an old hippie and he believes in freedom of speech, so long as it's not carried to a ridiculous extreme. And he makes exceptions for talent.

The little boxes can be thought of as little minds, designed and built for conformity. And in that sense, I agree that the song makes it's point. However, I have a reaction to it's tone that seems to be to be one of self importance and intolerance. All people are not the same, but many enjoy keeping things simple and uncomplicated. I don't care for any form of religion for myself, however I think many people would have a hard time getting by without it. The real question is freedom of will and expression. I always ask the question, is someone being hurt? A person can be comfortable and appreciate conformity while still being kind and helpful to others. I think the song over simplifies a complex subject.

As far as Pete Seeger is concerned. I have always liked him and his music. But I also love Bob Dylan's music. Bob Dylan himself has not always been a very pleasant of kind person, but I don't confuse that with his artistic expressions. And I do think that Seeger's reaction to Dylan's electric music was out of line and extreme. But there does seem to be a confusion of facts about what Seeger actually did and why. And about that, I haven't a clue.

You see there spendi. Some of us love and appreciate you. Tolerance for curmudgeontry. That's Wassau's motto.

@firefly,
Now I want to type up the CDs as I tend to have saved most of those. Back with that in a week or two.

On irish musicians, I've gone off my gourd for Christie Moore..
but only online.

Fun. I know ff enjoys it as much as I do.

I only ever sent one PM that was not a reply to another. It was to ff. And she didn't reply. That impressed me. I like snooty broads. When they are transformed into a juddering mass of wallowing ectoplasm there is a sense of real achievement.

Speaking for myself only (and who the hell else could I speak for??), when it comes to an artistic endeavour -- and I certainly include popular music in that expression -- I very rarely judge a piece of art on whether or not I agree with the (apparent) sentiments it expresses. If I did, I would probably detest most so-called love songs. It is the execution that counts. And by that token, Pete Seeger's music rocks. He gets the sentiment across beautifully. Whether or not I agree with the sentiment (in this case I do) is really immaterial. Is it well done? From my viewpoint, it sure is.

Looking forward to that. I always think I'll get organized one day. But somehow, that day never seems to arrive.
