@ossobuco,
Osso, a donkey's breakfast is old-time sailor's slang for the straw-filled bedding that each seaman was supposed to bring along for his own use on sailing ships.

The usual black coffee with a spoon standing in the middle to test for consistency. It rained all night here and it's in the forties now. We have been moving into drought conditions, so any rain is welcome.

@farmerman,
Yeah, we had drizzle all day, the thunderboomers in the afternoon, then dry, then rain . . .

Now they're calling for rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and or snow.

@farmerman,
What are your thoughts on slate?

Quote:
Slate. It is part of the look and feel of Wales, and now there are efforts to have its iconic status more formally recognised on the international stage.

Experts want it listed as one of the great natural stones to have had an impact on human culture the world over.

The case for many is being made in a special session here in Vienna this week at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly.

@izzythepush,
Honestly, Ive never had any thoughts about slate. i only did 2 jobs in my emntire career for companies involved in slate and both of them had itty bitty portions of their businesses i the rock (GAF used to grind slate up into tiny plates to spread over roofing felt to make asphalt shingles and they also had a division that made pool table tops.

I never saw marketing of slate as "the worlds best" Welsh slate is well known (as is Nazareth, Bangor, Reach Valley, Magog, and Peach Bottom). These are some slates from US and Canada mines. Slate is cool stuff and watching em cut it is fascinating.
Slate quarries are usually very stable rock bodies so they usually go verry deep down and Ive seen some 250 meters deep. Awesome places and one has to be very careful of the side dlopes because, since theres a lot of mica in the rock, the spoil piles and dust are slippery as fine mud except with oriented surfaces. Once they get wet, a slate pile is like a ski slope.
I once told my one client to thgink about using slate dust to pile on a slope for summer skiing.
Thats about all the opinions I have over slate

Although , it is best to keep a clean one handy.

@izzythepush,
I have handled hundreds of thousands of slates in my time in demolition. More maybe. The planning authorities in the Lake District insisted on slate roofs. That was the destination to which most second hand slates were sent. But not a few were exported. Loading a 40 ft. flat trailer with them was back-breaking work. Fixing them to a roof was no joke either. You could try ten before finding one that didn't wobble.

Once the out-of date mills were all demolished the price sky-rocketed. Only well-off people can afford them now. Getting out of laboratories into demolition was the best move I ever made. It was a man's world.

@farmerman,
We had a lot of rain last night also. Fortunately, the slate roof on my house kept things dry inside.

I should take advantage of the April showers and put down some grass seed, the lawn could use some rejuvenation. I use a lawn service for weekly maintenance, but I prefer to do seeding and fertilizing and weed/insect control by myself because they put down too many unneeded, and unwanted, chemicals, and they tend not to use quality grass seed, or even the right type of seed.

Some coffee, Wassau, please, and, because I'm unusually hungry today, I'd like some pancakes with real maple syrup and butter.

Well, we had the rain and the ice pellets--both coming down at the same time--and now it's snowing. I could go for some drought.
