@mismi,
bought 5 really nice lawn chairs of rattan wicker at an auction. They are very strong and were apparently well maintained. I cleaned em up with a polyphosphate and algecide and let em dry for a month in the barn. I painted em with an airgun using a white primer and a plastic coat, followed by a water based semi gloss poly urethane.

They are goddam beautiful and I got em all for 20 bucks the set, (4 bucks a piece).
Gonna set em out on the front porch with a wicker glass top table for afternoon beverages.

@farmerman,
Wow...third times a charm.

Those sound great farmerman. I really like rattan. So sturdy and durable. The table sounds lovely too. Plastic Coat....what is that? I should know I am sure - but I use wax to seal mine.

I am looking forward to my porch but the pollen this year is crazy. We have clouds of it floating around. I have foot prints on my front porch - my porch is yellow and where we step leaves a footprint. I am scared to breath. What's it like where you are?

@mismi,
a plastic is a thicker acrylic coat which adds some body and a bit of gloss. It requires drying in a dust free environment. I made a small covered paint booth where I could paint and let the chairs dry for a day so they were dry to the touch before a second coat. That way theres no dust marks or overspray from the airbrush.

@farmerman,
The chairs sound wonderful, farmerman, and so perfect for a porch. What a great buy you got on them!

Now we can all gather on your porch for drinks, after a lovely day on your boat. Wink

I make you two predictions.
1) Tomorrow, she will answer.
2) Your second question will be "What language do you think you are speaking?".

[Laughing] Actually, I didn't talk to a person live. I "chatted" with someone, and fortunately her English was excellent. AND we solved the problem efficiently, that is after I waited for 45 minutes for my turn on the "chat." But it is getting close to the deadline and I'm sure they're very busy.

Lola sits down on the sofa, takes off her shoes and sighs.

But the taxes are done and e-filed and accepted by the IRS so, I'm relieved.
Wassau, can I have a glass of white wine?

May I second firefly's post? I love a porch and the bigger the better. And I've only had one of those for a short while. We lived in Los Angeles and rented a house with a wrap around porch. I loved it out there. It had a swing and a hammock and my children who were very young at the time had their easel and art supplies and trikes out there too. Then came the Whittier earth quake and we went back to Texas. But I loved the front porch.

Now, so when are you going to invite us up on your porch and out for a ride in your boat? I'm putting on my sailor dress right now and I'll be waiting on the sofa. Just say the word.

@Lola,
Watch it, Lola. He'll have you keelhauling the poop deck and swabbing the mizzenmast if he thinks he can get away with it.

Oh boy, sounds so like my old school! We had 350 girls and, like Spendius' school, it was in demand and pretty hard to get into. Big common entrance exam with lots of bells and whistles - then years of dry as a bone teaching from dry as a bone mistresses. Not nuns - it was 100% WASP - and that was probably part of the problem - so dull and dreary, not an atmosphere in which one felt inspired to learn.

I assume that was the general idea what with teenage girls being so fast if left to their own devices. And you were being prepared for a dull and dreary life as a contented housewife.

It's the best way actually vonny. The alternative is mayhem.

fm was at a Jesuit school and look how well behaved he is.

There is a "Household" auction room not far from where I live. I often go down there to see if there are any decent books. They go for a song.

They are very interesting places from a sociological point of view. I never look at seating appliances though. They must be suffused with the detritus of old farts when considered scientifically.

@spendius,
Then, I suppose you dont sit on the barstools and instead quaff your brewskis standing up?

@Lola,
You wouldnt want to sit out on the porch anytime this week. All the farmers have been spreading manure on the fields so its a bit ripe in the countryside. We keep the windows closed until they have it all plowed under.

Our townships have a 2 day rule for plowing under any "natural fertilizers derived from animal wastes" (I dont know why they dont just say manure).
Everythings gotta have some name born in technology, even animal poop.

@farmerman,
I was only having a bit of fun fm. I was trying to amuse the ladies. You know how much they like fart-talk. But as long as you have sealed the cane-work with an impervious veneer I don't suppose you will notice any ill effects.

I know the auctioneer reasonably well and he told me that most of the gear comes from House Clearance experts. When a house becomes vacant due to death, in most cases, the relatives take anything they want and then send in these experts who divide the contents into what they think will bring something and what they think won't. They hire skips (dumpsters) for the latter.

One might see how tastes change as the decades pass by in these places. You see quite a few bull-workers, exercise bikes and bar-bells. In fact there is a large range of instruments of slow torture which only fundie Veblenists can really appreciate properly.

Good morning, everyone. I'll have a cuppa Kona coffee, Wassup, and a peek at the NYTimes. Had breakfast at home -- two hard-boiled eggs, a slice of multi-grain with cottage cheese and a glazed donut for dessert. So, just coffee, please.
