@Lola,
That's not quite true Lola. The reason I chose Apisa as an example, and he's a classic case, was because it was an opportunity to have a dig at him in return for the impolite, not to say nasty, slurs and smears he has directed my way and in the way of others and which you have failed to have words with him about.

Your emollient sentiments are nothing to the case and are merely your understandable desire to keep the peace. The peace will keep itself if the conversational gambits of the sort under discussion are set aside.

And it is not "according to" me either. It is according to all the known rules of logic and, indeed, common sense. One simply does not present unsupported assertions from which to draw a conclusion which suits one's purposes. It's vulgar however well polished the silverware is. It has nothing to do with me. It's the scientific method.

And for pointing out this obvious fact it is suggested that I am being my "usual disdainful, pompous, condescending self" which neatly avoids rebutting the fact as well as being a timely reminder of my saying that Apisa cannot stop himself doing it.

I don't have words with most people about their behavior. It's not really my business how people, other than I, behave. It's not for me to say. Now Wassau, on the other hand.................

BTW, In the sentence above, where I write "other than I," is I correct or should it be "me" or "myself?" Do you know?

@Lola,
I would use "myself" but I would never express such a view. It is our business how other people behave. The fault under scrutiny going uncorrected renders all discussion useless and that would never do.

Evelyn Waugh complimented Americans for their politeness in never expecting anybody to listen to what they are saying.

@spendius,
It's not my job. If you want to do it, that's up to you. The consequences of what we do is for each of us to interpret and manage. Who am I to tell Frank or you or anyone what to do? I don't know your motives, aims, history or stories. The only time I think it's my business is when I believe my safety to be in danger. And that's for me to define.

@Frank Apisa,
Explain to us all, Apisa, why you consider that a reasonable answer to the idea that the fact that one simply does not present unsupported assertions from which to draw a conclusion which suits one's purposes by suggesting that I am just being my "usual disdainful, pompous, condescending self" ?

The corollary being that if I was not being my "usual disdainful, pompous, condescending self" it would not be vulgar to present unsupported assertions from which to draw a conclusion which suits one's purposes. And it is so vulgar that respectable persons are loathe to consider that members of the same species as themselves would commit such barbarities or that any of their number might choose to ever be in the company of persons who do: except possibly on a street shoe-polishing franchise.

@spendius,
If Mr Waugh was correct my fault is that I do listen to what Americans say. Maybe it is impolite of me when I am not expected to do so.

Draw yourself up to your full height, Spendius...and look that monitor screen squarely in the face...and show it what a magnificent specimen of a human being you are.

Me...I'm going to imagine you doing so...and the smile will never leave my face.

I suspect there are others here who will do the same thing.

Yes Vonny yerba mate is not without it's drawbacks. It is certainly healthier than cigarettes (something I still struggle with).

Thank for your sympathies Lola. We are nearing the pleasant reconstruction phase of our relocation. We are also dividing our energies as there is a yoga studio that's not going to just open itself. Sadly yoga studios are not self-organizing machines. They require living influence to stave off entropy.

Spendius I do see benefit in peace keeping, but I also see the value in realizing the vast interconnectedness of all interacting persons (shared responsibility). So as to not simply offer conciliatory platitudes, here is the famous work by Donne on the subject:
No Man Is An Island wrote:

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee. --John Donne

It's quite common for people to smile at their own creativity.

I suspect there are others here who know better than me to expect any explanation of how me being my "usual disdainful, pompous, condescending self" provides evidence that presenting unsupported assertions from which to draw a conclusion which suits one's purposes is in any way helpful to anything except as a support for gross self-complacency.

And I find it astonishing that the fantasy of me drawing myself up to my full height and looking the monitor screen squarely in the face satisfies the considerations any better.

Both examples needs must be making the assumption that the "others" are less intelligent than you are, and by a considerable margin, because you are dependent on them believing that me being my "usual disdainful, pompous, condescending self" and my rearing up before the screen have anything to do with the subject under discussion about which you self-evidently have nothing to say.

The "others" have to be thick to be seen believing such hogwash and I hope they are all grateful for your compliments.

In which case Matt you might explain to Apisa that me being stupid (a collective for the vast range of slurs and smears he has directed my way) is not a justification for abortion, the assertion that our beer is overpriced, and the infliction of life on someone who never asked for it and for whom the bell will toll one fine day.

Coffee, please, Wassau.

Light and sweet, if you will...and a bagel with cream cheese.

Umm...something for that grumpy old guy over there in the corner booth. Something without lemon in it. Put it on my tab even if he protests.

@MattDavis,
All the time I spend in ARgentina I still never acquired a taste for Mate'. Too much crap to carry around (quampas aqnd alpacasand the "community spirit" of sharing the same quampa. (I keep gagging on sharing spit.

If youre worried about the PAH's in your mate', just get the unsmoked kind thats dried by natural means or is fermented and steamed. The PAHs all come from the smoke and its about the same a ssmoked keilbasi so I really wouldnt woryy. (Im more grossed out at sharing quampas and the stupid mate ceremonies that throw bak to the native cultures.

Whenever I drank mate I had my own little gourd and a silver alpaca so I could say "I like mine "ZER DOCE" . (Thats a combination of the Portuguese and German ). Every body else would drink their communal gourd without sugar , (gamargo?"--I forget the exact word).

I love Lapsang SOuchong which is even more loaded with PAHs and you can taste what kind of smoke they drry it in (Its like mesquite flavor, its so resiny).

Lapsang is really great "Zer Doce" or "Mas Dulce" (depending on what side of the altoplanno youre on.

@vonny,
If youre afraid of PAHs you will stop eating all smoked meats, barbecue, lox, baked beans, BACON (try to stop eating bacon).

Its all a hellish thrill filled ride to the grave so why worry,"be happy"
