That's true. Rupert Murdoch by all accounts really dislikes him.

So what? It doesn't matter if you are correct, when your mission is to make friends. My friends have lots of problems, I don't get far by going over to their houses and pointing them out.

You do if somebody asks you about their problems. And NBC had asked. There is no love lost between myself and Mitt Romney, but even I think that this particular scandal is fake.

@Thomas,
It's fake to the extent that many Brits don't think so.

Romney was asked a question, he gave an honest answer. For that, he was pummeled by the media.

The same media, no less, that otherwise pummels him for always giving evasive answers---with MSNBC leading the pack. (EDIT: I see you made that point in a later post yourself.)

@Thomas,
the question was

Quote:
BRIAN WILLIAMS:
And in the short time you've been here in London, do they look ready to your experienced eye?

he could have waffled a response, which would have been the courteous thing to do and at least not got him into a different kind of mess since he was already known for waffling

it's kind of like the thing about the ugly sofa. the best comment sometimes is 'ah, you've got a sofa', not that it's lovely or that it's ugly. Don't lie and don't offend. A good politician can manage that. A good diplomat will finesse it.

And I, speaking as a future American voter, wouldn't want my president to do that.

**** diplomacy. If George Carlin ran for US president, I'd go knock on doors for him. As to Mitt Romney, I have a problem with his habitual waffling; I have none with his failure to waffle in this case. No, London is not entirely ready for the Olympics. Good on Romney for saying it! (And boo to him for backpedaling later.)

@Thomas,
Romney already built up his persona as a waffler. Ask any conservative where Romney stands on any important issue.

@Thomas,
I think, along with CI, that Romney should have been truthful (pause) within closed doors. He did have legitimate background to give an opinion re his relatively short time observations. He was starting a conversation that didn't happen because it wasn't the right place and time for an actual discussion.
Cameron and he could have theoretically bonded a bit in commiseration.
He blew it.

And I'll join you in criticizing him for it anytime. But you've got to make your choice. Criticizing him for waffling and for not waffling at the same time is just bigoted and hypocritical.

I figure you've all seen this and, if so, will have varying views.

I haven't looked that far yet, but I tend to like to read the comments sections on Guardian articles (no wonder the dishes aren't washed, sometimes there are 1500 replies, most of them readable).

Carl Lewis, an ambassador right now.

@Thomas,
I don't have to make a choice about Romney's waffling; it's already common knowledge for those who knows how many time Romney has changed his position on many important issues to voters.

Here's a good start on Romney's waffling record.

When the host has millions of other guests and does a bad job at securing their safety? Maybe that the host gets shamed into shaping up. Coming from an Olympic city where bad security got 11 athletes killed by terrorists, I'd consider that a real benefit. Real enough that even a tiny chance of preventing a sequel would be worth an offended host.

So has the world of terrorism, and of security-breaching in general. It's an arms race, and both contestants are getting better.

You don't know that they've done a bad job of securing their safety. The games have barely begun, this being the very first day. Make a judgement after the games, or if there's an incident (I truly hope that there isn't!).

@Thomas,
The "world of terrorism" has been restricted to a few countries. Entrance to foreign ports are more difficult today.

Even the high-jacking of ships have been reduced.

Yaknow, I want to point out that it isn't just Obama supporters who are knocking Romney for this thing. Here's Krauthammer - who I usually disagree with, though he is pretty funny from time to time - on the topic:

Quote:
Look, when Cameron said the “middle of nowhere” he was not referring to Rangoon. He was referring to the mountains of Utah.

What Romney answered is beyond human understanding. It’s incomprehensible. I’m out of adjectives.

All the man has to do is say nothing, nothing in any of the stops on the trip. The statement of the trip is the places he’s going to: England, Poland, and Israel — all of which have been treated roughly and badly by Obama. All he has to do is show up and say wonderful stuff about his hosts and imply we’ll be strong allies, and everybody in those countries and around the world will understand it’s a rebuke without saying so — a silent rebuke to Obama — who treated the Brits and Poles and the Israelis pretty shabbily, particularly the Brits. Remember when he came to the Oval Office he removed the bust of Churchill. There was the State Department official who said there is no special relationship… and the Falkland Isalnds, in which we have a studied neutrality between the Argentines and Brits where we should be solidly on the British side on this.

The list is long. And all Romney has to do is say nothing. It’s like a guy in a 100-meter dash. All he has to do is finish. He doesn’t have to win. And instead he tackles the guy in the lane next to him and ends up disqualified. I don’t get it.
