It has been reported for years that the culture with in LAPD is to go hard, in the attempt to mitigate the fact that the force is underfunded and thus understaffed. I have heard nothing to the effect that this has changed.
That 's Y Joe Friday lost Ben Alexander.

I think you mentioned that once before, can you remind me what the group was about?
If twas guns, shhhh better not Smile
When I joined Mensa in 1978,
I found a need to create a new group for members
who wanted to go out and have a nice time, and pay their way.
Accordingly, I started a Special Interest Group for that purpose.

Its mostly a fine dining group; we travel for pleasure also; whatever is fun.

I'm from LA and I don't know local takes on this, as I now live elsewhere.

I guess I'll say 'trigger happy compared to what'.

Well if I was a copper in L.A. I'd be trigger happy too, seeing that Crips and Bloods have a stake in that territory.

Murder rates are controlled by gang bosses to play with the cops (the old cat and mouse psychological deception), I like to think of it as a crude Sine wave as a function of time.

Better to shoot first and ask questions later in gangster heaven.

@hawkeye10,
If they went soft, it'd be the other way around, and hearing from you that they are underfunded, they wouldn't want people dead in the force, or it's more money retraining newbies.

This is coming from a guy who hasn't had any particularly amiable crossings with the coppers of the male sex. They act like they're high on testosterone.

@trying2learn,
It's funny trying2learn how people's languages are different across the World.

Pepper, Capsicum are the same things here in Australia and we call it capsicum spray.. Funny, I don't know where you can purchase it from, it would be handy I guess to carry it in your handbag just in-case you were presented with a situation.

We don't have guns here, we aren't allowed to have guns here. Imagine our lives in that fear if presented with a problem?

Different worlds.

I read your thread the other day, I can see you have spent a considerable amount of time around the Police, close to your heart. I hope things are "ok" for you at the moment. Seems you are dealing with a lot and I am very sorry for all that you are going through.

On MY side of the world,
when I was home alone most of the time,
I felt a little uneasy in my emotions at age 8,
because I did NOT have a gun, Found Soul.
I was concerned that if I ever had to defend the place,
the best that I had was only a kitchen knife;
that was until a few weeks later, when I got my first gun,
a .38 Revolver which invested me with a sense of tranquility and serenity. Then I felt safe.

The low-grade fear I had BEFORE I got the gun ended forever.
I did not need to USE it for several more decades
before an emergency arose. Then, it was good to HAVE it.

@FOUND SOUL,
Pepper sprays can sometimes back fire, especially if the wind is blowing towards you, LOL.

Then are you saying the sport of hunting with gun is nadda. That's no fun!
They must atleast allow nonautomated rifles for citizens...

You are saying they banned guns, like they did in America with alcohol a few decades ago?

That's a bummer!

Sleepy little Adelaide, Country Town. I have wet lands across from me and twice I swear I have heard "pop pop" and the ducks scream.. But, apart from that, I am sure some people still have guns, but no they have been banned. Smile

Having grown up here, I am aware of all the sport hunting, deers etc, got to be honest, I couldn't do that if my life depended on it, well maybe if my life depended on it Smile

Yes different worlds. I understand what others write, yet the words used are not common where I live. For example: full stop, coppers and even handbags.

@trying2learn,
Smile I haven't used coppers in a while but I get your drift, I had the same problem when I first started on a Forum where they were mostly American. Sometimes though TL I would spell something wrong and they would "think" that was because I was Australian Smile

But the word handbag you don't use? What do you call them? I just say "bag" but I'm curious.

I feel for those that had to have guns and needed them at such a young age, that must have been terrible. Not with-standing for me it was protecting myself from men, in parks and the likes. Some how I was lucky enough twice as a child trying to get home from school.. It's difficult when there is more than one of them, or their car door is wide open and you just know but you quickly work out an escape route. I understand fear.

I 've heard that when Sir Robert Peel invented the police force
in Ireland and England in the 1800s, their early uniforms
had copper buttons, hence the name.

Years ago, I heard women call them their handbags.

The young age at which I got my first gun was 8,
in Arizona, where the other kids were better armed when I arrived.
I spent a lot of time at home alone, as my parents attended
to our businesses (furniture stores). In the 5 years and 1 day
that we resided there, I never knew of any crime whatsoever in the area,
but emotionally, upon my arrival there, I felt mildly uneasy,
in regard to defending the place, if that became necessary.

However, a few weeks later, I got a .38 revolver,
whereupon my sense of disquiet ended
and I felt secure, safe and serene.
I took it everywhere, but I never actually then needed
to use it, defensively; just target practice,
but it made me feel good, safe and happy.
( About 5O years later, I needed it and it was good to have it.)

I understand fear.
Fear can be turned against the bad guy,
IF u have the necessary equipment.

An acquaintance of mine was a retired police officer
who opined that most criminals are cowards
who panic and run, if thay see that their victim
is exposing them to danger (e.g., by pointing guns toward them).

So do I. David and I mostly get along well,
but someone used that on the old Abuzz forum, and it sticks.
Its from my email address,
which I created when Yahoo claimed that my real name had already been taken.
Its from "Opulent Mensan Special Interest Group DAVID"

@trying2learn,
Handbag is bigger than purse. At some point, they kind of morph into suitcases.

Remember the Rodney King case? That's what happens to LA cops who try to subdue violent unarmed people without first emptying a clip into them.

Chrise, theres more murders in LA annually than there is in ALL of the Brit Islands and the Irelands. No matter what OMG Dave says, its a fuckin travesty an its all becuse of our lax attitudes towards gun access
