Firstly, you're quite misinformed if you think that it's most Americans. The majority of Americans (North America, Central and South) are theists.

Secondly there are no more quanitity of atheists in the Americas than there are in other parts of the world.

I know a guy that knows another guy and both go to church. Likely, they believe in a god of some sort. Conclusion: At least 80 - 90 % of Americans eat at MacDonalds or Burger King.

I find it hard to understand why so many believe that one does exist when there is nothing substantial to base the belief on. I mean why don't you believe in flying pink elephants? You know they actually keep airplanes and birds in the air? If they didn't exist, planes wouldn't be able to fly, or birds for that matter.

So why don't you believe in the flying pink elephant?

But, as far as "most" Americans not believing, the statistics show that more people in North America are theists than in any other 1st world industrialized country. Most Europeans thinks we're a bunch of superstitious yokels. (They ain't too far off in that assessment, actually.)
